Scroll down for latest test build

This is an idea I was toying with while trying to sleep the other night.
The idea is basically a platforming game like Smash Bros. but without any direct kills. Instead the players must pick up and use powerups to make lure eachother into the traps in the map.

Examples of powers could be:
  • Switch position with the other player
  • Freeze the opponent (to make them fall into pits or push them over edges)
  • Reverse gravity for opponent (think VVVVVV)

I haven't decided on a graphical style/theme yet, but it'll end up being programmer art no matter what. I just kinda want the game to be silly.

Here's a quick mockup:

As a lot of the powers will probably depend on people jumping over a pit or somethink similar I'll need to make a way to keep players from standing in a corner to avoid it.

I haven't decided whether I'm going to develop this in Java or C++ (+SFML). Java will make porting so much easier (I have Linux on both my PC's) but I prefer SFML (or SDL) when it comes to games.

Maybe some power-ups could be to force your opponent to always be moving?

That's definitely an idea. My initial thought was to separate the level into different zones (like top right, bottom right, middel top etc.) and force the players to enter another zone every x seconds or receive some kind of penalty/punishment.

Haven't had much time lately but I've finally got most of the core things down.

Powers currently added:
  • Freeze opponent
  • Switch positions
  • Confusion (reverse moment)
  • Reverse gravity for opponent

I ended up making this a Java Applet but if I ever get around adding some music I might distribute it in a zip file instead (due to filesize).
