Hi, I'm working on some sprites for a civ style game I hope to make further down the track. They are meant to be portraits of famous heroes/leaders. I'm looking for general criticism, ways to make the sprites cleaner, more defined, etc. This is my first attempt at pixelling so any crits are welcome! The portraits are ramses, alexander, napoleon, genghis, abe, caeser, saladin.

Good job on the characteristics.

I think you should ask yourself what the style is you're going for.
I also think you should increase the contrast between some of the skin shades and delete the high contrast colors (alexanders hair for example).
Secondly the light source seems to be rather inconsistent, you could change that as well.

Thanks for the tips, green, you've highlighted some good things to consider.

I like your reworking! I'll rework mine in a more consistent style, adapt the skin tones and colours like you suggested, and make the lighting more consistent.

Cheers,
Ben

I'm much happier with these now. Maybe need to work on the colours a bit more, and caesers head is a bit square and he looks too much like alexander ... oh, and abe looks like a priest now, whoops, i'll fix that..

They look a lot better - just remember that one of the big things that differentiates people is face structure.  All of your guys have a J-shaped nose, one pixel of space, then a three pixel horizontal mouth; noses in particular vary in shape a lot.

Good point, thx. I'll look at characterising some of the facial features better.  Hand Thumbs Up LeftSmiley

Added a bit of variation with noses & mouths. I think they look good now, though who knows how they'll come out on a mobile device ... Undecided

Gandhi's eyebrows make him look very angry. They shouldn't come down in the middle. Maybe try them more like Alexander's, in an arch shape.

Just have his eyebrows as the top 2 px each.  Also, make his lips a non-black color.  TRUST ME.

First words that come in mind are contrast and perspective.

Tried to improve the contrast, and made the perspective a bit more consistent, with some exceptions...
