I think it is a crime that no one (including myself) has mentioned Hero Core yet.

It's boss rush, and considering sonic fan game are a genre onto themself (momentum platformer). Inspired by game like gunstar and contra hardcorp.

It's also an ironic take on sonic fan fiction

Sorry to derail a bit, but: Holy shit, Oddwarg! I remember his games from way back when. It's great that he's still making stuff.

I'm happy to say that Metal Slug has some of the best bosses in any 2D shooter!

The final battle at the end of Zelda 2, the showdown with Shadow Link, is probably one of the most intense battles of the NES era (if not one of the most intense battles of any game period). You really had to work your way through his defenses and while I don't think the AI was overly fantastic it did a great job of keeping you on your toes and keeping the pressure on. It makes me wish they'd just created an entire game that was nothing but fights like that. Actually, it makes me want to make a game that is nothing but fights like that. Hmmm...

Konjak has made some pretty sweet 2D bosses.  Also, I'll pretty much second any Treasure game; those guys were great at making bosses!

I'd write a devlog about my current game, but I'm too busy making it.

I'm glad to see some Hard Corps love! Here's a great example:

This is my favorite boss in the game. The music, the area, plus the fact that this robot just stopped a damned train to get to you make this one of my favorites ever. The end of Megaman Zero 3 is another great one as mentioned above, even though it's visually unimpressive, the circumstances around the fight make it incredible.

Also, if you want a TRULY epic boss fight, the end of Super Metroid is perfect. One of the most moving moments in a game for me. Not only is this thing huge, but the game makes you truly want to destroy it with every ounce of power left in your body.

More Treasure love in the form of Mischief Makers...

Really it boils down to presentation. 2d or 3d can be epic.
Remember scale vs size. And meaning vs coolness.

Symphony of the Night has some great ones.  My two favorite, of course, are Galamoth and Granfalloon.

For 2D, Cybernator on the SNES had some great boss moments, in particular fighting a boss halfway up an asteroid being driven into the atmosphere with giant engines. It's brilliant due to context; you don't just need to defeat the enemy, you need to destroy him with enough time to take out the engines before they irreparably alter the asteroid's orbit and kill billions. Hell, and that's only the third mission. Awesome game, often overlooked.

3D, my favourite boss battle ever is th Crimson King in the flawed yet brilliant Otogi: Myth of Demons. believe it or not, there doesn't seem to be a single video of this fight on Youtube - only its inferior rematch in Otogi 2 - so I'll attempt to explain. Raikoh, the main character, is an incredibly strong demon, capable of smashing his enemies through walls, scoring furrows in the ground as they crash to earth, blasting them with flaming phoenixes fom his outstretched hand. So is the Crimson King; except CK is slightly stronger, just a little faster, a close enough match that you always feel in danger, but not impossibly so. They meet in a fully-destructible snowy bamboo grove, divine in its untouched perfection. Five minutes of clashing blades, hurled magic and teleporting mid-air strikes later, the glade lies in ruins, craters and furrows revealing dented rock beneath snow, shattered and sliced bamboo everywhere, the iced-over stream cracked and running with clean water where your fight tumbled down its banks.

On a technical level, I think this fight works on a number of levels; you face on enemy with all your skills, but with a slight advantage in each of them, so it feels like it was player skill which won the battle. The setting also plays a huge part, a relatively simple battleground, but one which is very visibly and intrinsically affected by your battle.

The 2D-Final Fantasies (Especially IV, V, VI) had some pretty epic shit in them.

The Final Bosses (Neo-/Exdeath, Kefka...) were particularily impressive...
