It seems to me that due to a number of factors the City Building/Management Sim category of games has really suffered over the past several years.

Sim City 4 hasn't had a real successor and it was released in 2003. I've seen some reviews of Cities XL 2011 and from what I can tell it's a bit lackluster.

I've got a real itch for some good sim-gaming though... does anyone have a favorite? Indie or otherwise, I don't really care. I just want some really good, in-depth gameplay, like the years of old would have given us.

I haven't played any of these, since my computer's crap, but Anno 1404:Dawn of Discovery, Settlers 7, and Tropico 3 are all supposed to be okay to good. There's also a city transport planning game that just came out, Cities in Motion.

For a general non-city-building sim recommendation, try the latest version of Europa Universalis III.

Has anyone here tried CitiesXL? I'm wondering if I should have bought it during the steam  sale...

From what I've heard of Cities XL it seems to be pretty mediocre.

I haven't played anything more recent than Sim City 3000, unless you count my failed attempts at understanding how to do stuff in Dwarf Fortress.
