First off, I searched for "Magicka" before posting this topic, and saw that there was already a thread for the game in this forum. But it was a really old topic and had a bit of a negative vibe to it, so I decided to start a new one instead.

For those of you who haven't heard of it, Magicka is an action game where you play one of up to four wizards who can combine elements to create spells, and use those spells to fight various monsters. It may not sound like anything new, but the magic system in this game is truly innovative.

I can't describe it very well myself, so I'll just give you a link to a video called "WTF is Magicka?" that shows you the first part of the game and explains the magic system. I recommend skipping past the prologue and only watching the gameplay parts of the video.

And personally, this is the most entertaining game I've seen this year, so far. Not only for the truly unique magic system, but also for its great sense of humor. It made me laugh out loud many times while I was playing the adventure mode, and that doesn't happen to me often. There are nerdy references everywhere, and I loved it. Smiley

Also, you definitely should play it in cooperative multiplayer. It's a lot more fun when you have a few friends with you, especially considering the friendly fire aspect. You can and will kill your allies and even yourself with your spells, whether by accident or intentionally, and those moments are generally the funniest ones.

I had only tried the demo, and experimenting with the different elements is SO FUN

i really have to get around to buying it, although the frame rate on my computer sorta sucks for some reason.

I've already bought the game three times. One for myself, and two for my (cheap) friends.  Tongue

The only bad thing I can say about this game is that it's pretty glitchy and crashes often. I hope they'll be able to fix most of those bugs soon.

A friend of mine has been raving about this game over MSN recently. The magic system and co-op sure sounds fun, but I have a huge backlog of other stuff at moment. I'll probably buy when I have time to dedicate to it (rather than studies and other games).

I checked this out because a friend recommended it - unfortunately it runs far too slow on my computer to navigate the main menu, let alone play the game. I'm glad I checked out the demo before I committed to it. Man I need a new video card.

It looks a lot like Zelda - Four Swords or Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers in the sense that's it's four player co-op. I really liked both of those games, so it's a bit of a drag that this one doesn't want to run.

The game is a bit buggy, and there are a lot of systems that won't run it at all, but patches have been coming out in a fairly steady stream. Fortunately it runs reasonably well on my laptop.

I really like it. The way it presents magic in the game is fairly unique and refreshing. In most RPGs your magic is pretty much just a series of ready-made skills that cost MP to cast. In Magicka, though, you make your own spells, and you don't have a limited MP supply or anything to worry about.

I like how your spells are somewhat unpredictable. It takes a lot of experimentation to figure out what works well and what doesn't. A lot of combos are just as likely to kill you or your allies at they are to kill enemies. For example, summoning a lightning bolt when you're the only one around will get you killed, as will using lightning whilst wet. The game is mostly about strategy, since different combinations work well against different enemies, and certain types of spells require good positioning to be effective.

You would think that such a game would get too easy once you discover some spells that work well, but it does a fairly good job of changing up the enemies enough that you have to keep switching strategies. The game has a fairly good sense of humor, as well, which does a good job of keeping you interested enough to play through to the end.

Based upon the bluexephos playthrough the game looks amazing. I guess it would be best to play it with friends, just for the comedy value, but I love the way spells work, and how they can be combined, and turned into beams and stuff.

There is a Steam promotion of Magicka currently. You can play it for free until Sunday, and also buy the game at 75% off (which is an absolute steal considering that the game was already cheap to begin with).

If anyone of you guys is a total cheapskate but still wants to have Magicka, tell me your e-mail or steam ID here and I might give it to you.

Yeah, i played through it with a friend, was really fun Ninja My favorite thing to do (aside from lightning bolt) was teleport into a group, then earthquake, then unleash the preferred mix of AoE spells to wipe em out.

Also, the zombies Crazy we died sooo many times vs those...

I haven't played it for a while, but the online seemed really slow.  I don't know if it was my or my friend's connection, or my computer, but it was slow.  THe first time we couldn't even revive each other.
