Seriously? Final fantaasies and zeldas? and "J"rpg's? What ARE you? Not sure if this is joke or not Anyway, the most recent one was Syberia 2's ending. There has also been many other ones and some which have not made me "cry" but feel longing and other rather strong emotions. I don't see why crying should be in special position here. Many people don't cry to any human creations which doesn't necessarily mean they aren't great works. But yes, I think story has much to do here and since usually storytelling in games is rather primitive...

You are a bigot and an elitist. Why do you care what kind of games I play? Why do you care which games make me cry?
He's not a bigot or an elitist. He has a serious mental problem commonly known as being eight years old.

@ Theophilus: I can not take you seriously with that avatar(if that was aimed at me). @ Paint by Numbers: I don't know a single eight-year-old who would have the atention span to read 50+ 'boooooring' books and pay attention to other peoples views. I am not eight(This means I payed attention to your view). @ Theophilus again: About your view: That was a joke ... No really. I just wish that people stopped making jrpg's. Like, NOW.

but what comes to ways of storytelling in games, who else agrees with me that cutscenes are constantly being bashed more because of how they're integrated than the general quality of them

People have varying levels of emotion, so there's no real scale on what will make a person cry. Something that will make one person cry might not even phase someone else.
However, on the topic of "growing attachments to characters", Team ICO's games tend to use that as a primary theme. You might want to check those out if you haven't already... in my opinion, ICO does a particularly good job at this.

What I think about JRPG's like FF is that they ill themselves with the characters in a sort of way. EDIT: Didn't see you there AndrewFm. Yes, If ico made a reaally good rpg then you could actually get the result(allas they have not).

@ Paint by Numbers: I am not eight. @ Theophilus again: About your view: That was a joke Oh, sorry. Sometimes it's hard to tell one's age when they make jokes like Your tastes are not as mine, so I do not respect you. I am a hard man and will prove it by ending this with an emoticon.

I feel that games make me more emotional than movies is because I'm playing as the characters. It's a role for me to take on; I become them. In a movie, I watch guys do stuff.

Hmm... I never thought about myself being the char... No wait! I feel that way but I don't think about it when I play. I guess that could play a major role too.
