Energy consumption is clearly a big stake in modern world, too bad decision has to be made hastily when it's already late. It's not nonsensical but it's not clever.

most energy is used by industry, however. something like only 20% of energy is used by individual consumers in homes. so it seems like a bad idea to target individuals instead of industry if you want to reduce energy usage.

That's why it's not clever Smiley
But any reduction is a reduction, with the kind of growth our society have it's not sustainable to not cut corner when we can do it. Whenever I look at the curve I found that crazy, the acceleration is looking like an exponential curve, even with a large amount of resource we will reach a breaking point. IMO all current problem on human societies comes down from two major interrelated problem, energy consumption (as a broad concept of resource) and demography. Problem is that the obvious solution that make sense are largely impractical ... I think our generation will see a major shift in civilization and that will be ugly ugly.

I own two LED bulbs, and they are awesome. Unfortunately, they were $14 each. I'm very happy with them though.

I put them in my garage door opener. The vibration destroys filaments in incandescent bulbs, and CFL bulbs don't work well in the extreme cold of my garage.

It also seems like a lot of people misunderstand the law.

Thirdly, the US government mandates that most vehicles have a catalytic converters to reduce pollution. That's a much bigger cost on consumers than mandating energy efficient lighting, but I've read a few things that make it sound like this legislation is the first law to take away consumer choice in the name of safety, pollution reduction, energy efficiency, or otherwise reduction of other negative externalities associated with a product.

yeah but you don't get negative health effects in a minority of the population by mandating that catalytic converters are more efficient (afaik)

I had a dream once that the new compact fluorescent bulbs were part of a reptilian scheme that affected humans in some way because the new light had some kind of calming or subduing effect on us: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_sensitivity

I remember in the dream even feeling the light on my skin gave me a crawling/burning sensation. Heed my words, people, before it's too late! It's already too late.

us reptilians have no reason to use ridiculous lightbulbs when all vegetarian food is already laced with a mind-controlling sedative

so what about theatre lights? I have a 600W incandescent sitting on my desk, is that now illegal?

(answer: no, as I'm not in the US)

Yeah, and what Paul Eres said about "why not target industry" - perhaps because the lightbulb-law-makers want people to die, or get sedated.

After you get sedated, you become fuel for the Centennial Light.

So... This sort of reminds me of the digital TV changeover a few years back. The legislation was put into place years before, and it wasn't until a couple months before that people really started to care (or hear about it at all) and be outraged that they were told what they needed to buy.

Did people really not hear about this until just now?

As far as the poison threat goes, you know that your dental fillings and thermometers contain like many many times more mercury than a fluorescent light bulb right? I mean don't break open a bulb and breath in the vapor, but you don't need to run screaming when you break a thermometer either.

edit: Also you need to realize that it's mercury vapor. Open the windows and let it blow away. Done. Don't lick up the glass fragments.

Right, it's the vapor part that makes it more dangerous because of the risk of inadvertent inhalation. Dental fillings and thermometer fluid won't get into your bloodstream unless you're dumb enough to swallow the stuff. Also, most thermometers don't use mercury anymore, and unless I'm mistaken, dental fillings have also evolved.

That said, the risk still seems overblown, and I always opt for CFLs because I trust myself not to drop the bulbs and to clean up safely if I ever do.

there are problems with thermometers and mercury dental fillings as well; lots of people die because of both of those

also, non-mercury thermometers and non-mercury dental fillings are available and not illegal. that's the difference.
