Hey - I am looking at purchasing the Razer Hydra for just fun and perhaps modding.

Can anyone recommend the Hydra as a high quality game controller?

honestly, i would recommend the humble mouse and keyboard, or xbox 360 controller, before i would advise using the hydra. for sure, it is a difficult beast to tame, and one that requires considerable setup. i found that chain mail was a necessity when battling the hydra, and other kinds of armour were ill suited to the water. typically, you have to stab, slash, or otherwise incapacitate 3 or more heads (WARNING: READ THE MANUAL!!! DECAPITATING A HEAD WILL RESULT IN IT GROWING 2 MORE IN ITS STEAD, WHICH LEADS TO MEMORY MANAGEMENT ISSUES) before it will acquiesce and play video games on your behalf. it became a bit of a chore to throw myself into the frothing surf equipped with all manner of swords and shields each day, just for the novelty of controlling your games with a mythical sea serpent. after a while, i found that i just left it to languish in a closet alongside the joystick that i used to be the best plane guy in battlefield 1982. but even this brings issues, it became ornery and loud, making my neighbours feel unsafe, so eventually i just gave it to goodwill.

The Hydra must be a son of a bitch to defragment if it keeps on creating new partitions every time you interact with it. Maybe use blunt weapons instead of bladed... I don't know, I think I'll have to throw technical support an email for help.

I've tried one out before, I wouldn't call it a "high quality game controller" at all.
It's pretty impressive the way it uses black magic to track the 3d position of each stick, but that's about all it does well. Trying to use it has a mouse was horrible, it's terribly shakey and inaccurate (like a Wii mote, only worse) and tires out your arms 100 times faster than using any normal game controller.

I have difficulty thinking of a game that would it the hydra well (aside from surgeon simulator) but if you can think of game that suits being played with 2 floating objects in the position of your hands, go ahead, otherwise stick with something normal I think.

I got to try them out last week together with Oculus Rift and they feel pretty gimmicky to be honest. If someone gifted them to me I'd accept them gladly but I won't be spending any monies on it.
