No, it wasn't either of those. I went through my entire inventory in detail because I thought it was a vampire bat at first, but there was nothing.
Once I thought I had a bug too, but it turned out I had a bat, they can be really difficult to see on the dark background, I went through my inventory several time until I finally see it.

Also, the protagonist bears a striking resemblance to Phubans's blue knight avatar thingy. I wonder if he's played this game?

I'm playing Aria of Sorrow with a special challenge where I don't equip or use any items. It's very interesting how some of the overlooked souls become useful this way, like the Bat soul, which has a short range but low mana cost and high damage so you can spam it as a replacement for your weapon.
Heh, that's an interesting challenge. But wouldn't you quickly end up dying really easily if you can't wear better armor? Or is that part of the fun? Later games even have level cap challenges (I've finished Order of Ecclesia in the mode that caps you at level 1, which makes most enemies instantly lethal). It all boils down to learning the most powerful combinations of spells and collecting the life-up items. Then you have to learn to dodge absolutely every attack by each boss because you're made of tissue. Without a level cap you could conceivably just level up until you're powerful to beat anything without items. I'm on the "Anticitizen One" level of Half Life 2, and it totally deserves all the praise it has gotten. The levels are really fun and varied, though I wish there weren't so many parts where you're stuck in a room listening to people explain the plot. (Teach the plot on the move!) The way they've avoided the standard method of the hero carrying a radio to contact his buddies all the time more than makes up for that, though. I've been playing Rhythm Tengoku for the GBA, the first game in the Rhythm Heaven series. It's pretty rad in that you can play through it without understanding English, though there is a dude editing the game to include English text. I'll prolly link his project page if he gets beyond just the first level he has now, so as not to excite people about something that might not ever get any further than that.

That's the idea; Castlevania games are designed in such a way that you can generally dodge any attack that the enemies use. This means that with careful play, armor is not necessary. I'm not done with the challenge yet (just beat the Great Armor boss) so I can't say how difficult this is towards the end of the game.

Sleeping Dogs! Liking it so far... it's pretty much GTA in Hong Kong. The story is nice, you can see that some effort was put in the writing, the undercovered cop thing is a nice excuse for the game to let you play police and mob missions at the same time. Though, this lead to some inconsistencies (done a lot of bad things for a cop). Also, fighting feels good.

^ the fighting mechanics in SL are better than those in most open-world GTA-ish games, but since it has so much heavy focus I was hoping it would be more refined. Firefights were not terribly exciting, though still up to par.. the gimmicks like vault/slowdown and action hijack lost their appeal quickly, but I still enjoyed the environmental attacks right till the end. I liked that the game didn't have you babysit characters the way GTA tries, you go on ONE date with a girl and you're done.
At times it succeeds in feeling like a Hong Kong action flick from John Woo, which is exactly what I wanted. Right off the bat, the opening chase scene looks and feels pretty good. I recommend a playthrough, it's over quite quickly. It has less appeal as a pure sandbox game, though.

I'm currently playing FFIX after almost a year of putting it off. I'm gonna be honest, I don't like it. The combat is way too slow, and I don't find the setting or the story very engaging. IMO FFVII was better in almost every regard, except for graphics. After all the praise I've heard about it I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a tiny bit a disappointed. Gotta work on this backlog, though

I couldn't get into FF9 either, I liked FF3/4/6/10/12 though (haven't tried 7).

Yeah definitely give VII a shot sometime. I still think it holds up great today, but I may be a bit biased. Also now that you mention VI, that's next on my "to play" list once I get this backlog cleared out. I'm actually kind of excited for that. I've only played up through the intro, but I remember really liking the atmosphere.
