Oh Spelunky, I love how you make me feel like a brilliant idiot every time I drop a rope where a ladder is, because it's all I have to set off a dart trap besides a bomb.

Also, back in the DDR, back in the Dark Souls, back in the KoF XIII.

Played through Just Cause 2 and working my way through Saint's Row 3.  Gonna say, I love them both.  While the GTA games are obviously tongue in cheek, they still take themselves a bit too seriously.  Both JC2 and SR3 go full-blown ridiculous and it's pretty awesome.

I'm currently playing FFIX after almost a year of putting it off. I'm gonna be honest, I don't like it. The combat is way too slow, and I don't find the setting or the story very engaging. IMO FFVII was better in almost every regard, except for graphics. After all the praise I've heard about it I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a tiny bit a disappointed.

It picks up (8 is even slower, be warned). Visually I think IX is still the best in the series, but in its gameplay is no less tedious than the typical jrpg. That goes for all FF games though.

I aim to get into Dark Souls proper. I had dropped the game for several months without having done much progress. I'm wondering if I should consult a guide, since I noticed that taking some paths too early is a complete waste of time.

Every playthrough has at least one "moment". I've wasted so much time on that game.

i really wanted to like saints row 3 but tbh i thought the best thing about it was the character editor (i tried to make my dude look like a cross between tommy wiseau and robert z'dar and i think i succeeded).

I sold all of my games except my portable ones and old ones, so lately just New Super Mario Bros. 2. It's kind of not as good as it could be. Mario 3D Land was pretty great. It was different and fresh. This is just the same vocal chirping block thumping game that came out on the Wii and DS.

Also lots of coins. I played 8 levels so far (on World Mushroom and 2 ((what the hell kind of world is the Mushroom symbol)) and I have something like 60 lives. Its nuts.

When you go over 255 lives you die forever.

Isn't the object of the game to get a million coins? Doesn't that mean you gain 10,000 lives before you get there?

I have zero urge to get NSMB 2. I picked up 3D land again recently and finished up the first half. The second half is very challenging, but I like the twists it adds like the shadow mario and timer levels.

Shadow Mario can go die (I don't like that at all haha).

But yeah, the goal is not 1 mil. coins. You get something special if you do (it is incredibly dumb). It is their advertising efforts. So I guess it is a goal? I am not going to try to get 1 mil. coins though. I will beat the worlds maybe, that's it.

It's nuts how much better 3D Land is. The music. The level design. Ah, the level design in 3D Land is perfect for a portable. It just felt fresh and new usually.

Only downside is that the Tanooki Tail is overpowered and the only thing I ever wanted to use.

Going through my backlog after reinstalling Windows. Just finished Bioshock for the first time. It was a fun time, will play through on the harder difficulties later and try for the other ending(s?).

Started playing Team Fortress 2 since the Mann vs. Machine update.

I'm on an action RPG fix. Here's what else I've been playing:
Torchlight
Diablo 2
Diablo 3 (starter edition)
Path of Exile

One of my friends recently beat NSMB2 with a whopping 578 lives. This is bad balancing. I can see a level giving you something like a 5up or a 10up, but ONLY if an upcoming level JUSTIFIED it by being hard enough you'd die that many times.

It sounds too easy to be worth bothering with. Does the game even HAVE a losing "GAME OVER" screen?

it's because the game is focused on getting lots of coins, but they still give you a 1up for every 100 coins. that, combined with the lesser difficulty and boring level design of the "new" series means that everyone can succeed at the game. isn't that fun?

also the fact that there are still lives in modern mario games is super dumb, but if they got rid of them the nintendo manchild legion would riot

its such a shame that nintendo seems to be catering to those kinds of people more and more with their "core" franchises. most 1st party wii games left me completely cold.
