@demon souls http://www.giantbomb.com/demons-souls/61-24057/how-was-maiden-astraea-evil/35-381521/ Saint Astraea actually went to the Valley with a number of people. First she had Garl Vinland her lover who is still there with here at the end, the Moonlight Knight Bito who somehow ends up slug food in 5-2 though there is no proof rumor is he was left to die by Vinland because he didn't agree with Astrea's decisions, and lastly the chick whose name escaped me who used the spear Istarelle she was just clubbed to death by giant depraved ones though.... Moving on. She is where she is because that is the deepest part of the valley, the literal "core" of the corruption. This is believed to be because that cesspool was the dumping ground of aborted babies of the depraved ones. There she tried to cleanse the corruption only to find out that not only was the corruption more powerful than her but she in fact was drawing her power from the same thing that powered the corruptions effecting the valley, that is, the Old One. That is right kids Umbasa does exist, he just happens to be a soul eating demonic entity from another plane of existence. Realizing there was no "god" or Umbasa (literally speaking this is the name of God in Demon's Souls) at least not in any sense she expected she became mildly depressed. Realizing she got her powers from the Old One she knew she needed more power to hope to effect the valley and to do that she had to become more demonic and take on an actual Demon Soul. Now her motives are pure, she is not evil, there is no debate on that. Her actions were flawed though, you can't cure the corruption and she refused to face that reality and by the time she realized this it was too late. If you look closely in game she is literally tied to the ground, tendrils of red crap have grown into and under her skin and she is now a part of the valley and can't leave period. She really was just waiting to die. Now why do you kill her? Simple. The only way to end all this crap is to put the Old One back to sleep. The only way to do that is to draw him out and make him open the path to where he is. The only reason he would do that is if all the arch demon's gathering souls for him are killed and his food for lack of a better term is cut off. At which point he will summon the most bad ass dude remaining in boletaria which happens to be you. Astraea has become one of these arch demons and is feeding the Old One souls even if she doesn't mean to so you have no choice but to kill her or you will never get the chance to put the Old One back to sleep. It sucks, but she screwed up not you and because a part of the system because she could not bring herself to kill the depraved ones who actually do have to die in order to stop the Old One. Hope that sheds some light on it. PS: The three knights of Boletaria Oolan, Alfred, and Metas are all in Boletaria as bosses. Oolan was known as the leader of a vast horde of men, aka Phalanx, Alfred is obviously the Tower Knight, and Metas is the Penetrator. Likewise you fight all three of them in their "soul forms" (aka their real bodies) at the beginning of 1-4. You can also find all their corpses in game, Alfred and Metas are both in 1-3, Oolan apparently died in her ancestral home at 4-1.

Arkham Asylum has some of the best brawling of any game in a long time, in my opinion. So satisfying.

Got in quite a few hours of Deus Ex 3 over the weekend. It's definitely open to different approaches, and a lot of the areas can be explored in many ways. I started in the hardest mode, going for the no kill, no alert playthrough first, and it feels a lot like Metal Gear complete with actual boss fights. I had no idea, so I kept my inventory empty save for some non-lethal grenades and a stun gun. Really sucked having to run around the arena-like area finding pistols and ammo to weaken him and then go for the finishing stun gun blow all while being chased by grenades and chain gun bullets.
But yeah, aside from the boss fight surprise, I'm really enjoying the game.

Metro 2033. On steam for 5 bucks for a few more hours. Thinking of getting the book, I like the story so far.
I got stuck 2 hours in because I didn't buy enough air filters and still had a while left on the surface You can load a save from the beginning of the last level, you know. Then buy a crapload of air filters. I bought like, 30, and ended up with more than I left with, so I guess it matters where you look too.
More linear than my dick but I enjoyed the story too. The weapons were great and fun to shoot. It's such a shame exploration has been so degraded with modern FPS's. Also, the animation is piss-poor.
To be fair, most of the game does take place in subway tunnels. But the surface levels [while still being pretty linear] allow a lot more for exploration [as far as I've seen]

Playing Thief: The Dark Project with the widescreen DDFix (200 degree field of view because I can). Ghosting, no saves.

Dead Space. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. Also, tons of Minecraft, TF2, and the first season of the new Sam & Max games. I just bought Sleep is Death, but I don't have the time to put in the amount of prep work I feel it deserves, and I don't know who to play it with, either. But I still think it's a cool idea. Seems kind of like the indie tabletop RPG "story game" version of Neverwinter Nights.

I don't get Sleep is Death. It seems like a lot of effort to do what I do using just an instant messenger.
Send your buddy an IM: "You are in a small room, a rusty dagger sits on a table. There is a painting on the east wall. Obvious exits are north and west."
Instant game.
I'm playing inFamous and doing it the evil way, to see all the other missions and the cool evil powers. I kind of feel like an asshole, though. If video game Hitler told you to kill an NPC who did not deserve it, would you do it? Yes I would, for the achievement. Does this make me a terrible person?

Sure, an IM client would be easier to use, but I think part of the whole point of Sleep is Death is dealing with the graphical representations and the time limit. It forces both players to think quickly, it encourages the GM to innovate and find uses for sprites and ways to respond to the player's actions that fit within the constraints. It also gives both players a shared visual reference, which can make things more interesting by allowing the player to interact with incidental details that weren't explicitly described by the GM. if you're doing it over IM, that's just long-distance rules-free tabletop roleplaying. Sleep is Death is a computer game, not a tabletop game, and the extra effort is part of that. But as I said, I haven't actually played it yet, so what do I know?

I played Sleep is Death once, and it was really fun, but I haven't got the patience to work out the interface in order to actually run a game myself.
Although obviously you can emulate the basic concept just through IM, the visual representation makes it feel more like an adventure game where the story can go in any direction at all. As mentioned before the time limit also makes it more focused and faster paced than a standard IM rp.
Anyways I currently playing Far Cry 2, which is pretty fun, as I've had it since just after it was released and never got around to finishing it.

I read the description and got excited. Then I saw the screenshots - terrible indie artsy gimmick style killed it for me.

I didn't have a problem with the graphics. I DID have a problem with the controls. Half the time I couldn't figure out what I was holding, how to use it or even necessarily where I had gotten it from.

I am downloading the Prince of Persia Trilogy HD bundle off the PSN, got the Prince of Persia game (the one where he has the claw) and the DLC for it. I am gearing up for a 'beginning of the month Prince of Persia play-a-thon'.

With The Sands of Time, Warrior Within, etc? That trilogy is fantastic. It is on my list of games that I wish I could completely forget so I could enjoy them from a fresh perspective again.

I dunno how I feel about the reboot as a game, but as an experience it was effin' fantastic. The end/credits... Holy dang. The DLC just kind of shits on it all though.
