Stay on topic guys, this is "What are you playing?" not "How did you freeload off of society today?".

Finally got around to playing Vanquish. It feels super-weird to play a Platinum game that isn't judging me by giving me bronze and stone medals after every fight. I really like the high-speed action, but I didn't find it to be better than games like Bayonetta or Okami. The plot was cringey and cliched without feeling tongue-in-cheek (like Viewtiful Joe), and it felt constrained by the high number of on-rails segments. I felt like Metal Gear Rising topped it in pretty much every category.

i do

also bayonetta is good but it's basically devil may cry with boobs. vanquish is a cover shooter that actually does something different mechanically, and that in itself is pretty cool. vanquish is the only platinum game i really like tbh.

you do not want mikami to attempt "serious" storytelling, trust me on this (or just play the evil within). the story is complete throwaway trash and is upfront about it, just like in resident evil 4 and god hand.

it certainly topped it in the "being a different genre" category

i stopped painting miniatures ages ago

these days when a board game has minis that have to be glued together thats already a deal breaker for me.

My problem is that the minis are too detailed. Too many tiny things to paint and I keep missing 'em so it takes longer than it should and I just give up. I'm also thinking that maybe I should've painted them whilst they were still on the sprues before assembly since I keep messing up getting at the bits that are obscured by parts of the models. They are really fantastic minis though, even my cack-handed job looks good.

Well yea, GW minis look great. But for me it's just too tedious to have to glue and/or paint minis before i can play a game these days. My Warhammer 40k days are long gone.

Not to mention GW is kind of a shitty company that sells their stuff at completely ridiculous prices bc they know nerds will lap it up regardless.

These ones look better than the 40K stuff, even better than the current Age of Sigmar stuff and those are really good looking minis, the treemen and the Nurgle stuff especially. But yeah that price point although I think it's justified* being Space Hulk because that's the best thing that they've ever done. Better than Blood Bowl and Necromunda even and I was a Necromunda die hard back in my youth. That game was so so good, the revival of the Specialist Games range fills me with a lot of hope.

*and it's really hard to justify any of their prices these days and using that old chestnut "you're getting x models for cheaper than what you'd be paying for them separately" only works if you're going to use them in 40K and even then it's an argument that is moronic.

I played like the first half of Tail Concerto. So about 2 and a half hours worth of Tail Concerto.

I know that it's regarded as a forgotten classic in some circles and that, as a result of this, it can get pretty pricey on eBay.

But goddamn if I can't find a single good thing about that game. I can't even /hate/ it. It's like the didn't even try.

- You start off in a reasonably detailed, if small, city, where you can explore for some extra lives/photograph pieces/etc. There are buildings you can go into. There's like two minor puzzles here. This is the only area in the game that's this detailed.

- The controls don't work. You can't turn manually, and you really need to be able to. You can't really strafe, even though you need to, because if you go right/left you start to automatically rotate/trip off the camera. You can't manually control the camera. There's some wall grabbing but it doesn't trigger consistently. You have to attack by throwing stuff, but aiming is awkward at best.

- Bosses are lame bullet sponge things.

- Characterization is nearly non-existent. Princess Terria is vaguely tomboyish. Alicia has a crush on Waffle. Waffle has a pulse.

- Storyline is a jarring mess of stuff just happening. It's not confusing or obtuse stuff, there's just no transitions between events.

- Level design barely counts as such. There's a mine area. It consists of like nine platforms connected with minecarts. The platforms are basically identical and just serve to lead to other platforms. There's a lost woods-type area consisting of like three clearings.

-

Music is just mashing on cheap toy midi keyboard.

"I'm not" was alright, but I felt "I'm not 2" was a far superior game as was "I was" and "Maybe, I might". It's a shame kids today don't realize and appreciate how great, especially for an early 8-bit game, "Sure, whatever" was. Video games have gone down hill.

Anyways, been playing through Demon's Souls again, there is a surprising amount of people still playing. I never summoned other players when I first played it ages ago, this time around I've been summoning and invading like crazy and it is a total blast. The Souls games are some of the funnest multiplayer games I've played.

kero blaster (from the guy who made  Cave Story) had a content patch recently, basically doubling the length of the game. new story, new levels, new bosses, new difficulty.

it makes me scream at my computer and then pick it back up a few hours later

The huge Steam sale got me to clean up my wishlist a little bit. Been playing a quiet little game called The Spatials. Interesting idea, you run a space station and take a crew on away missions. Implementation feels very shallow, though.

Edit: I'm no longer sure that it's shallow. But for the love of god, the tutorial/explanation/help system sucks.

I remember liking New Vegas so I got the DLC during the steam sale so I could try jsawyer but I don't like this anywhere near as much as I remember.

For reasons I'll get into later once I've though about them more, since they get into a growing disinterest I've had in PC RPGs over the last few years.

But tl;dr version, the combat doesn't really work, the reliance on skill point gates is just not engaging in the least, it's really repetitive, and it feels like it relies too much on doing something and reloading until you get a favorable outcome. That the game is set up in such a way that the last point there actually works out a lot is probably my biggest issue with it. That the last point is true for a lot of PC RPGs is probably my biggest issue with PC RPGs.

Also fuck what everyone else says, I like Sayonara Umihara Kawase a lot more than Shun.

By focusing more on the individual levels and not forcing you to start from the beginning every time -- basically the Super Meat Boy meta-game -- and not doing stupid time abusing stuff like the first boss or doors that send you backwards, the game's design lets the player fail, embrace failure, and learn from it. Also emphasizing the physics puzzle side of the game and downplaying the enemies a lot really improves things in my eyes -- the random enemy spawn was really annoying in the first two games.
