a tip for Human Revolution: if you hate the boss fights because you specced stealth, just put a point or two into Typhoon. You won't need most ammo, especially if you go nonlethal, so just make sure you have two shots of typhoon ammo and every boss will go down instantly.

its basically the "fuck bosses" ability. i always take it.

personally, i've started playing Drakensang: The River of Time on fartron's recommendation. i was pleasantly surprised to discover a modern rpg in the vein of good old neverwinter nights and games like that -- you should check it out if you get the chance and like that era of crpgs. voice acting is middling but the game is good and doesn't look half bad

as a plus, you can be a magic rogue called a charlatan who gets a skill that summons magic butterflies to distract enemies while you fence them to death. it's very... distinctive.

if you're used to western rpgs based on DnD archetypes (i.e. most of them) you will be confused at first because it is based instead on the dark eye and uses some different skills and ideas, but you will figure it out. no worries!

das schwarze auge (the dark eye) is so much so much better than d&d imo. no wonder d&d is kind of unpopular here in the german speaking world.

Started playing Azrael’s Tear (finally), and it’s one of those adventure games like Johnny Mnemonic or Phantasmagoria A Puzzle Of Flesh that sort of expects you to know what to do and gives you vague clues to other puzzles. There's this puzzle I'm currently on and I saw a plaque in another room that correlated to this machine, however the pipes just don’t seem to go into the holes they do on the plaque, so this will be interesting.
Azrael's Tear is a very early 3D game, so every time you go into a new room it has to load, but the load times aren’t bad, the rooms are rather small though, for the most part. Had a couple combat situations and you have to go into combat mode, which may sound annoying, but it’s pretty well integrated. Shot an explorer and a dinosaur, good stuff. Just need to figure out that darn puzzle. So far it’s a good game, just complex.
Did get some screenshots of it while I was playing:

I've been playing Age of Empires: Online. It's got the great core RTS game in there, where you can play with friends and matchmaking, and then it's got a social meta-game on top, if you're into that kind of thing. Either way, it's free to play, but I ended up buying into premium content.

As a fan of obscure RPGs, I would also like to know why it is better.

the rules are less combat-centric, there's a broader range of skills for different stuff and character generation is more detailed. i also like that it's not just a "system" but comes with a fleshed-out setting (that isn't just a generic tolkien ripoff) out of the box. in short it feels like a more complete roleplaying experience to me than d&d.

also i grew up with it Tongue

Once my big projects are complete I'll be tackling this as well. I doubt that I'll complete it in a reasonable amount of time though.

this.

(disclaimer: I never played DnD PnP, just heard of it...)

DSA/Aventurien is a very "realistic"/authentic approach for a fantasy world.

on the downside: with more rules and content you might feel limited in your fantasy. there also might occur discussions about history, gods, appropriate behavior of elves etc. because so much is written down, some guys always know better...
of course good players know to handle this.

just imagine an rpg made by slightly pedantic Germans.

Amusing American Amazon review:
Quote
This game system is very math-heavy. If you like juggling lots of numbers while trying to run your character, you'll love it. Otherwise, you'll quickly learn to despise the system, since the math constantly interrupts roleplaying. It's obvious that sales of the game, between 2003 and 2011 (now) have been horrible at best, since the company that translated the game for use over here in the U.S. has long since gone out of business. The only reason I bought the book is to act as a manual of sorts for the computer game Drakensang, which I'm told is highly underrated. Of course, the company that made the computer game also went out of business.
The ruleset version before the one he reviewed is even more complex. And he only reviews the basic ruleset for beginners Wink. AFAIK currently there are 3 basic rulebooks: one for magic, one for combat and one for character management. Of course there are additional content books with additional rules. Selling rule books is an important monetization strategy for DSA ^^.
