The graphics ain't too pretty, but I don't care much. They have some of that rough charm Demon's Souls has,
idk about thaaat...

the souls games' graphics aren't technically state of the art but there are some really creative environment, enemy, character etc. designs. the games have a lot of personality and atmosphere. dd is just cookie cutter fantasy for the most part.

anyway, i'm at my first city now which is also apparently the largest city in the game. the laws in this world sure are weird. you can walk into peoples houses and steal to your hearts content but hit anyone and you go to jail immediately lol. but for the most part the game doesn't try to "simulate a world" in the way the elder scrolls games (for instance) do. the towns are vending machines and quest kiosks for the most part, and npc interactions are completely static p much like your typical jrpg.

the pawn system is pretty cool. you have one pawn you create yourself and two others you can download from other players (there are premade ones as well i think). there's stuff like rating others' pawns and getting items when someone else downloads your pawn etc. also your personal pawn's "personality" (AI) changes over time. i wish there was co-op with real people as well though.

Bought the grand Adventure Bundle for The Shivah and The Sea Will Claim Everything, and just got a promo copy of The Journey Down, all which look incredible. Very tempting to round it it out and buy The Dream Machine.

Make sure and check out 1893 from that bundle as well; it's really good.

I, personally, finally got a copy of Gray Matter.

So, I'll be doing that for a while.

Hahaha, what? I've gotten one of the endings already, but never saw a way to customize my character like that. Afro Quickman with a hawk on his head?

Got sucked into Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes a bit. Still squishing through Demon's Souls and La Mulana, but I'm embarassingly brickwalling on them both. Especially the latter's case, because it's still trying to access the first boss. X$ Walk the path of angels, trigger that doohickey, check. Green gem in the mouth of that thing, check. Pushblock puzzle room to get to boss chamber, check. The anhk is right there, but I can't seem to activate it...

I betcha it's something slap-in-the-face obvious/stupid, too. I just KNOW it.

I've also speedran across my town in 20 minutes, designed a fraction/decimal/percentage multiplication grid to help my cousin with his math, and created a DDR setlist/mission generator. Does that count as playing, too?

Played some Red Orchestra 2 today since it was on sale and I really liked the first one, it's quite good.

About to finish downloading Garth Marenghi's Alan Wake's American Nightmare so I'll be playing that tonight.

Kid Icarus: Uprising is pretty fun, but the controls are really awkward. At first I was going to brush off the stand as lazy but now I'm glad I got it. It'd kill my hands otherwise. The really obvious fourth-wall breaking humor is really unusual, and I'm not sure if I like it or not yet. I think maybe after a couple of playthroughs I'll decide for certain.

I love the variety of the weapons, and how the game is really open to letting you pick what you like. The Megaman Battle Network style skill grid is great.

I hate that they keep putting in "Do X 100 times" achievements, like "Sell 100 weapons" or "Make 10 gems". Seeing those on the treasure hunt wall always dampens my excitement. I just want them all to be like the time-attack challenges.

I need to polish up a couple of outstanding Indie Games on this forum and then maybe I'll launch into Dragon Warrior 7.

Kingdom Hearts 1.

The combat feels really, really good. The game will require you to utilize guarding, counterattacking, and dodgerolling to their maximum potential, and to really take positioning into account. It's super satisfying to guard an enemy combo, push it back, dodge roll forwards to close the gap distance, and then whale on it with your Keyblade.

It's also pretty fucking tough. It doesn't feel like a game intended for its younger audience, but hey, there it is.

The level design is amazing. Hollow Bastion in particular. I love how massive everything is, and how many paths there are through the level. The sense of scale, and the verticality make it one of my favorite levels of all time. Destiny Islands and Traverse Town are really great as well, with Traverse Town having a TON of secrets that you can find as you return to it after obtaining new abilities, and with Destiny Islands having some really catchy music.

^a couple of good pieces from the game

My gripes with the game are:

-camera often gets stuck behind objects. the sequels fix this, though
-the gummi ship minigame is too easy. you can literally hold X and make it through everything alive.
-special attack abilities (sonic blade, ars arcanum, etc.) should have been mapped to the Triangle button. It's a hassle to have to move my fingers from the thumbstick to the dpad, then to press it a few times to get to the proper menu selection. By the time you do that, you've taken a ton of enemy damage.
-offensive spells are too weak by the midgame. as soon as you get the cure spell, it's hard to justify wasting mana on some damage over a spell that can heal you back to (almost) max health.
-goofy is worthless.
-summons (with the exception of tinkerbell) are worthless.

Funnily enough, I actually like the story of the first Kingdom Hearts. It's not nearly as convoluted or insipid as the sequels. Sure, it's weird, but weird in a good way.

Overall, a fantastic game. Holds up well today. Shame the sequels lose all sense of difficulty.

I think magic is a lot more relevant if you chose the mage upgrade path at the beginning of the game. I might be wrong though. I know that's how KH2 was pretty much.
