Pocket Tanks

I've never laughed so much at a game before. It's fun and the weapons are ridiculous

I been a BAAAAAD buoi. Sad

Last couple weeks, I went BINGE GAMING.

Spelunky XBLA.

Spelunker HD.

Sonic Generations.

Some DDR stuffs.

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

And that's just some of what I've LP'ed! I've also sunk into The Binding of Issac, Mr. Driller LIVE, Bejeweled Blitz, Terraria, Sushi Castle, BlazBlue Continuum Shift, just... totally unproductive! XD

Even when I'm not making, or processing, or uploading Let's Plays, I'm watching other ones, like Indie Impressions or Northernlion's channel. I've poked little bits of progress here and there, but lately I'm in total PLAYER MODE.

*shame* My name is baconman, and I am addicted to qwesome.

EDIT: How bad is it? I'm making posts between levels of Spelunky HD right now.

I just finished Crysis 2, bought cheap on steam earlier this year. And play BF3 once a week with long distant friends.
Crysis2 bored the buggery from me, my drive to complete the games I start kept me going. Having said that, I never finished New Vegas so I guess my drive isn't as strong as it once was.
The last game I played and enjoyed was Journey. Spending more time working on games then playing them. That shit happens I guess!

Right now im playing Dead Island.
Its a fun game, but with weird bits. I am playing it single player.

Heres a few thoughts about it:

-The melee fighting is very satisfying. Zombies blow up in gore when you hit em right. Melee being satisfying is so damn important guys.
-I loved that you can target specific limbs/spots when you hit em. Its satisfying to bash a bunch of heads in one mighty swipe of a morning star.
-I like how hard it is to come by a firearm in the first few hours of the game. The first time you find a pistol its like WOAH! I can SHOOT at things now! That was pretty cool.
-The game starts out easy, and quickly becomes real hard. Being mobbed by just more than two zombies can get you killed if you arnt careful!
-The weapon modding is nice. Its a cool lil addition.
-The game achieves a good level of immersion. Feels a lot like the first couple hours of playing Fallout 3, you feel like youre scavenging and surviving. I like that sort of feel in a game.
-At first I was thinking the resort island theme would get old pretty quick, but they mix things up a lil a few hours in.

The game is surprisingly difficult after a short while, it can really put you on edge. You really need to pay attention to where youre fighting, pick the right weapon for the right situation, watch your stamina, kick enemies to stagger em instead of just using your weapons...
I wonder though if that may be an unintended consequence of the game being tuned for a multiplayer experience, making the single player difficulty higher than they anticipated. Being alone doesnt just reduce your damage output, it also means all enemies target you at once, and you're more likely to be surrounded! Well, intended or not, I like how hard it is. Keeps you on your toes!

There are some bits of the game that are awkward in single player. In a single player game, you start the game all alone fighting zombies on your own, that sets a very different tone to the game! It makes it scarier, closer to a normal survival horror sort of experience. But then, like two hours in, a first cinematic plays as you get close to a crashed helicopter. The pre-rendered cinematic shows all of the possible playable characters walking together having a kind of buddy cop-ish hostile group dynamic. That was really damn jarring! I had kind of forgotten at that point that the game is a multi-player sort of thing. After that point the cinematics become a bit more common, and every time they play its like, oh right, im not alone im in a group of 5-6 loud, obnoxious people that appear only in cutscenes. Also of course NPCs always refer to me as being a group. Thanks for the help guys! Thank you, everyone! But its just me..... ....
Its not really a gripe with the game, its just a sort of funny consequence to playing the game single player. It really sets a different tone.

The cinematics of the game are pretty weird in general. A lot of them have a sort of forced sentimentality to em with obnoxious sad music... It kind of rubs me the wrong way every time.

There was an annoying moment where a specific action unexpectedly "ended the mission", and so youre like, oh wait no! Im still exploring here! But you cant stop it... A cinematic plays and then you are suddenly teleported outside the place, and cant get back in anymore.

The way the game handles changing weapons can lead to frustration. Sometimes, if you pick up a weapon on the ground, it equips it automatically, and sometimes it doesnt. That is very annoying when you pick up alchool (for some reason considered a weapon), making you take a swig instead of hitting the next zombie with a hammer. Also, if your inventory is full, picking up a weapon exchanges the weapon youre currently holding with the one on the floor. But its not obvious when that happens; You arnt always aware that youve just dropped your favorite melee weapon on the floor! I actually lost some cool weapons forevver because of that.

The game has some taller zombies called "thugs" that are really frustrating to fight in single player. They don't stagger easily, so hitting them with a huge hammer doesnt often keep them from swiping at you. Their arms also seem to have a freakishly long range of attack, so killing them in melee is super tedious. Your own melee range is kind of hard to evaluate to begin with, so you have to inch your way closer, try to swipe once with your weapon and dodge back, which may or may not avoid the monster's counterattack. Every time it hits you, it knocks you on the ground, and your dude takes like 3-4 seconds to get back to his feet. Every fight against these guys is frustrating and irritating! I presume theyre not as bad in multiplayer.

All in all the game's pretty fun, I dont regret buying it. It was like 10-20$ in a Steam sale I think.

Didnt really like Dead Island. Too grindy, combat is pretty repetitive and happens too often for it. Didn't care for the setting and the game tries too hard to be "edgy."

I dont agree with any of that! I think the game is flawed, but I don't think I ever noticed those specific flaws.

The game isn't really grindy. It cant be! All of the enemies and item drops scale to your level, making grinding more or less useless. I never felt any need to just move back and forth through town and kill enemies for the sake of getting money, items or experience, I just do the main missions and some side quests, and never ran into the trouble of being "under-levelled". Of course it means getting "stronger" feels completely pointless. Its the opposite problem! There are a lot of sidequests though, but theyre usually things you do on your way to complete the main quests, like picking up canned food along the way, stopping by a house or two...

I'm not sure the fighting being repetitive is much of an issue. It doesn't feel like the game is about fighting as much as surviving. The more the game advances the more I find myself running away from battles, whacking at enemies legs to knock em down instead of killing em when there's too many. I guess its true the game could use more diversity with the monsters though. At where I am at there's maybe 5 zombie types? But as I said, the enemies are more like obstacles along your way than anything, especially when moving through big open areas like the city and resort park.

I don't really get what you mean about it "trying to be edgy" either! Maybe that's just a bad choice of words? Or did you notice something I didn't/don't remember? The story bits look more or less like typical zombie/horror movie stuff, with extra melodramatic moments that seem forced every now and then.

**Backseat game designer time:
I think that if I had designed this game, I would have toned the Diablo-like RPG stats/loot shit thing waaay the fuck down. They dont really make sense anyway. I would have made skills be less about raising your damage output by tiny ratios and other shit like that, id have toned down the diablo-ish loot stuff, and made enemies not scale to your level at all. Its a very awkward mix that makes no sense.
Its stupid to have this weird weapon damage vs. enemy HP power creep, it adds nothing to the game whatsoever. Eventually the enemies scale so much to your level that they have like 10000HP, and hitting em with a shovel you find on the ground instead of your super duper upgraded Level 26 wrench of destruction takes away like 30HP (im not kidding about the wrench thing).
Actually I would have made the games' weapons be a lot more disposable, too. A game like this would feel a lot more hectic if you had to improvise all the time with new weapons as your old stuff broke down. But instead its just a Diablo thing where you upgrade your weapons whenever you get a better one as loot and repair them at regular intervals. Stuff you find on the ground is usually unusable unless you find em in special iron chests (which have item drops that scale to your level). Its dumb!!!! Dumb as hell!

The only "power scaling" would probably happen whenever more players join the game, so the game doesn't just become a joke when you got 3 friends with you. But other than that, the whole power creep thing is really baffling to me.

Been playing trough Batman: Arkham City on my big brother's account on the Hard difficulty. Was a pain at the start, but once I learned combos and to spam the E button every time the combo goes yellow or red, it got much easier.

A great, fun game in my opinion and I'm currently trying to find all the Riddler trophies and finish all the sidequests.

Halo Wars and Deus Ex: Human Revolution currently, With a back log of about 10-15 other games I just can't commit enough time to to be worth it.

I've been longing for a spectacular game to play, and everything I have picked up in recent time has been pretty underwhelming.

Tried going back to some PS1/SNES games, but I've already played through all my favourites recently, and nothing new has stood up to the joy I got from those games.

I miss that feeling of escapism games like FFT and Chrono Trigger used to give me. It's sad.

Yeah, Halo 4 is pretty much the only game I am waiting for at this point. Halo:Reach lasted me pretty much up until a month or 2 ago. I can't wait to sink my teeth into the next game.
