ah, that's a good point. i'd put legos in the middle category then

other examples of the middle category might include musical instruments, because those don't have goals but also have rules (to an extent -- harmony, chords, keys, etc.)
Grades? The ability to play certain pieces?

i wouldn't call those inherent to the instruments themselves. someone can have a musical instrument and choose those goals, or not choose them. the instrument doesn't force you through learning easy music before learning hard music. those seem like external systems imposed on teaching music.

also, not everyone even uses music instruments to play the music of others. some use them solely for composition (for instance, i own a keyboard, but have never played any song on it other than songs i've written). so at least in some cases those are entirely optional.

Now that I think about it, there is really no such thing as a toy with no rules and no goals. Even a GI Joe - it's arms and legs have limited points of rotations, and if you want to throw it or do something else with it, you are limited by the laws of physics - the only thing that is theoretically without rules would be a black hole I guess, and that would be rather difficult to play with.

i think there's a distinction between external rules and 'rules of the toy' -- saying that g.i. joe has rules because of physics doesn't mean that the rules come from the toy (the g.i. joe), the rules come from physics. so they're not the toy's rules, they're the universe's rules.

by contrast, the rules in dust, or simcity, mario, or chess, etc., are not external, they aren't part of physics, but part of the game itself.

Not that the concept isn't a Good Thing for people to be contemplating or that McGonagall isn't a smart and sincere person (I don't know her enough to say)
Seems pretty smart and sincere to me, I mean without her Harry Potter wouldn't have ever survived.

Ah, don't ready Harry Potter, did I misspell her name or something?  Shrug

I have arrived to salvage the rotting carcas of this thread and recycle the fluids within to gain as much feesable biogas to power the world for an atosecond of AWESOME. <3

So, anyway, why isn't there a thing thing that shows how many topics you have that ave atleast 10  Hand Thumbs Up Right or something like that. Can I get a  Hand Thumbs Up Left Hand Thumbs Up Right for this topic? It displays insanity very artistically.
