Mechas are generally divided into "real robot" and "super robot", with Mazinger, Gurren-Lagann, Gundams from G Gundam etc being in the super robot category (and super robot shows are generally "lighthearted" when it comes to describing combat) and Full Metal Panic, the more realistic Gundams (like 08th MS team), etc being much more down-to-earth in design and capabilities (though they tend to have some unreal capabilities too to make them actually feasible in combat). Real robot content usually describes war and combat much more realistically.
I haven't actually played that much mecha games myself but I've always had a high level of interest in them. One game that I remember fondly though is Metal Fatigue. It's an RTS game where the game plays out on three layers (underground, ground level, high in the sky) and a big part of the game plays around custom mechs you can build with the parts you have available for you (legs, torso, two arms). You can also steal parts from destroyed enemies.
Metal Fatigue That game was excellent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyDluMaX2sA&feature=related

Why not divide mechas by qualtiies?, I always felt that If you understand things by what has been created you are limiting your creative capabilities, because you will only be able to copy what has been already very well established. Better to understand the basic nature of each thing, or basic rules, and go from there.

a super robot is piloted by awesome. you get in and you scream ROCKET PUNCH and your fist flies away into the other guy. Then you get really angry about something and your robot becomes all super sayian, and you combine with your team to become BETTER ROBOT. then you get angrier and you summon your SUPER SWOORD from a lightning and then the bad guy is all "oh no the super sword" and you go "SUPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER SWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORD" and you win the episode
a real robot is not real at all, it is a gundam, but compared to a super robot it tries to make more sense. you get in, it is like an advanced vehicle. you dont pilot it with pure passion, you have incredible skills (even if it's your first time.) It is war, there is no magical space alien (well most of the time). You and your squadmates aim, fire and hope.
I love giant robots. I'm a giant robot.

I've always thought that Mech games would be the absolute fucking coolest video games ever made, but only if they truly made you feel like you were controlling a mech. Steel Batallion is pretty much that, although I feel like more could be done nearly 10 years later. Super excited for the Kinect version-- I'll trust that the developers won't let us down with the controls. So yeah.

Now I'm just upset that no one did a multiplayer giant robot game. Three to five giant robots that can combine.
