Hey, I think I had one of these. I remember spelling fucked up words on it with my step-brother and then laughing when it spelled out the words... lol. I was only 9 or 10 though.

My XPS M1710 bought in 2006, and now in 2011: Intel Core Duo @ 2.16GHz 4GB RAM NVidia GeForce 7950GTX+ 17" 1920x1200 main screen, 1920x1080 secondary 100GB HDD (+2.5TB external) This "desktop replacement" was the fastest in the world when I bought it, beating out all competition with specs unheard of on a notebook. Five years later it still runs great, having upgraded all the way from Win XP to Win 7 64-bit, and still going strong. Unfortunately the high-end 7950GTX+ is a faulty graphics card that burns through itself faster than I can buy fans to blow at it. This is already my third, and this one's pretty dead too. Not only do I have that huge fan pointing at it at all times, there's peripheral fans under the damn thing too, that aren't enough by themselves. XPS technical support knows me well. Even so, I love him <3

I just switched to a 11" MacBook Air as my main and only computer (actually I have a 2010 mac mini acting as a media center and a work provided 15" 2006 Macbook pro but I don't use them nearly as much).
1.4 GHz Core 2 Duo 4 GB RAM 64 GB SSD nVidia GeForce 320M
For me, the low specs are completely worth the extreme mobility, good battery life and tiny power consumption (I think it's important to think of power consumption when it comes to our tech gizmos- electricity isn't free, financially or ecologically).
Plus, everything I do on it runs great (mostly web browsing, spotify, code, writing in latex), so why have higher specs?
I also have a 21" Full HD Dell monitor on which I hook it when I want large screen space at home.

Time to make yourselves feel superior to me...again! It is in my signature, but for the chance I change it:
CPU: 2.8GHz Pentium 4 RAM: 512MB GPU: Some sort of Intel on-board thingamajigger HDD: 20GB + 1TB External OS: Ubuntu 10.10. Windows is being a problem so I wiped the drive. Monitor: 15" Dell. 1024x768 (4:3)
This thing's ten years old, I am in need of a much-needed upgrade.
I feel your pain, I had one just like that ('cept with a 1.8GHz P4), before I built my current machine. Is it one of those awful clamshell case Dells? If you consider a Dell Dimension 3000 one, then yes, it is. And what's with all of these absurdly large resolutions?

And what's with all of these absurdly large resolutions? These resolutions are pretty standard for any (semi)recent computer, actually. In fact everyone I know has a resolution of at least 1280 x 768 or larger. It's very handy when doing a lot of multitasking, something I do all the time.

And what's with all of these absurdly large resolutions? On my 1920x1080 desktop monitor I currently have two Word documents open side-by-side, each at 100% zoom. I can have two code files open in the same manner in Eclipse when I want to. The widescreen aspect ratio makes it great for multitasking or comparing documents, especially with Windows 7's "Snap" feature. I suppose it would also be good for viewing one long file of code if I could turn the monitor on its side, but my monitor isn't built for that. Nowadays I think it's actually more difficult to find a new monitor that doesn't have a large resolution.

You're silly! And what's with all of these absurdly large resolutions? After being at 1920x1200 you'll never want to go back. Using a smaller screen I get claustrophobic in Photoshop. It's heaven being able to have your tools wherever the hell you please.

I wouldn't mind having a second, larger monitor for graphics work or web browsing. I'm not sure if I would take advantage of the extra real estate while programming, though it might mean I could justify more open windows in emacs. My current monitor is 1366x768.
