my theory on Chell's origin is that Cave and Caroline had an affair, thus creating Chell.

bring your daughter to work day.

the dates seen in and on the gel chambers add up to where it could be possible: based on her appearance, Chell could have been born sometime in the 80s. on top of that, Chell, Cave and Caroline all start with C's. it's silly, but it does provide a bit more support for them being connected.

At some point it's said that Caroline is Cave's wife. It's also likely that Chell, having little physical resemblance to Caroline and Cave (picture: http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/half-life/en/images/0/00/CJ_and_Caroline.png) and GLaDOS talking about Chell being adopted even while being a potato (GLaDOS says that she's unable to lie while a potato) and in addition one of the potato science projects having Chell's name on it leads to the reasonable conclusion that Chell is Cave and Caroline's adopted daughter. This is also reinforced by the redaction of Chell's last name, which if Johnson could cause GLaDOS to be suspicious, or something.

I don't recall it ever being mentioned that  Carolyne was Cave's wife; more just a general implication. Correct me if I'm wrong, though. Also, GLaDOS as a potato comments that the extra 0.5 volts generated by the magnesium in the portal gun allows her to lie.

I didn't notice Chell's name on one of the potato battery exhibits, though -- that's a clever detail, I'll have to look for that this time. Smiley

Actually... It's bring your daughter to work day that got Chell in teh facility. We knew this from Portal 1. However, unless you're suggesting that ALL of the children represented by the various projects in the exhibit are Cave Johnson's and Caroline's, it's irrational to make the assumption that Chell is. Chell's project also seemed to have a growth accelerant in it... Which she attributes to "Daddy's Help", on the project. Nothing like a growth accelerant seemed to be in any of CJ's demonstrated science tests - it seems more likely that Chell was the daughter of the groundskeeper! Furthermore, if Chell was the daughter of Caroline & CJ, I don't think GlaDOS would've just deleted that component from her personality - a living relative would've resulted in increased survival instinct. GlaDOS never seems maternal towards Chell. Even when she's "defending" Chell from Wheatley, she makes sure to keep insulting Chell as she does it.

But yeah, Caroline is CJ's wife, CJ even says it in one of his recordings, and of course, there's the painting.

When does he say that? All I remember him saying is that she's his assistant. Also, I'm probably not remembering everything, what was the connection between Bring Your Daughter to Work Day in the first game and Chell getting into the facility? Unsure of where I got this, but I faintly remember that event being the day of GLaDOS' activation. If that's the case, then Chell can't be the same Chell that made the potato exhibit since the in-game Chell is obviously older... Hrm.

Man, this game really scattered the Portal timeline something fierce, huh? Shocked (not to mention making the previous Aperture Science timeline as show in the first game's ARG completely obsolete)

IIRC, in the level you get the Whiteout achievement in, but I could be wrong... Go and replay the game to find out. Tongue

I'm trying to make coop maps for Portal 2.

You know what the hardest part is?

Getting people for helping test the map.

Please volunteer for recruitment at your local recruitment office. (PM me your Steam name)

starsrift: Oh, no, I'm fairly sure all he says there is (essentially) "If I die before you can pour me into a computer, I want Carolyne to run the place. She'll say she can't, she's modest like that." -- I think I remember the absence of direct references to her being his wife because that's what I initially assumed and was looking for confirmation too, but never heard any.

So is this significantly better than the first one?

A lot of people are saying it's amazing, but they said that about Portal 1 too, and that was just alright.

It's leaps and bounds over Portal 1. If you weren't too impressed by that one, who knows if you'll be impressed be this one. All i can say is that it's had a very large improvement.

But i could tell you it's the best game ever made; that doesn't change that it's your $50 to spend. IMO, if you watch the youtube footage and read reviews and you aren't excited afterwards, there's no hope for you.

I disagree; in my opinion, Portal 1 was a much more tightly-constructed experience. I couldn't name anything I really disliked about that game, whereas with Portal 2 there is a small list. In terms of variety, atmosphere, and story implications, though, Portal 2 definitely has more than 1. It's also a lot prettier and has some cool sound design going on. Tongue

It's a great game. I have finished the single-player yesterday and can say that it is better than the first one. It may not be a long game but again the length is perfect and not short.

I just finished the first chapter of the co-op game and it was so much fun, I'm looking forward to the rest.

Also, the ending is AWESOME.

If you thought Portal 1 was just alright then I think you'll think this is just alright.
If you're not excited by the trailers, then-- yep. That's what it is.
