Guess someone missed the memo that Capcom's pulling their usual 'buy the demo or we won't make the game' bullshit. For those who don't know, they did this with the original Phoenix Wright, instead saying they wouldn't localize the sequels unless more copies were sold.
I'm sure whether the demo sells or not, it'll get finished, and that this is just some stupid PR tactic, but it's still pretty annoying.

If the game is liable to sell they'll sell it, whether or not people buy into this demo shop business.
I expected your link to elaborate on the 'certain other reboots' comment, but it did not. Could you specify which series reboot to which you are referring, because no obvious candidate springs to mind.

Cave Story hasn't gone anywhere to reboot yet. The developers just sit at the startup screen, throw their hands up in the air with frustration, and then mash reset wildly and make the same game a third time.

Could be pretty cool, my younger brothers played the heck out of Megaman Legends 1 & 2, so I'm of the opinion this is a good thing. I'm not against Capcom trying something new with the development/delivery either - if it works out for them, more developers/publishers might think to try something new with a limited demo and extended content releases.
So I'm going to be optimistic and go with 'it could be a good thing on multiple levels'.

Yeah, I hope we get to buy demos more in the future. I don't know about you but I personally LOVE paying for stuff that should be free.

When the alternative is the game not getting made, I think paying for a demo isn't such a terrible thing. No different to kickstarter, really - you see something you like, you put your money down. If there's enough interest, stuff gets made.

@Destra We should not buy the demo, we should preorder the game through demo (wolfire, minecraft)

I dunno, I think the difference is that Capcom have a lot of fucking money and don't really need to be pulling shit like this - they could just as easily put a regular-style free demo up to gauge interest. Of course, if people are willing to pay money for a demo, that is a pretty strong indicator of interest, but unless demo customers are going to get some completely sick bonus shit, it all seems rather grasping.

Toom took the words out of my mouth. This isn't some indie making a game on a shoestring budget, we're talking about Capcom, one of the biggest Japanese game companies. If they can afford to release something as niche as God Hand, Okami or Killer7, they can afford MML3 without resorting to fan financing.
This whole thing looks like a marketing stunt to me. As someone else already pointed out, they pulled similar shit with Phoenix Wright.

Again, I disagree. Capcom is a publicly traded company. I'm not sure what the numbers on MML1 and 2 were, but Capcom's taking a gamble on one of ther spin-off IPs, and hedging their bets. Chances are someone in the company said 'Hey, we have this IP that's been lingering in limbo for the better part of a decade and a half, maybe we could do something with it" and the higher ups hmmm-ed and ho-ed, and eventually said "Sure, but let's see if people are actually willing to pay money for this IP. Make X levels, we'll put it up as a paid demo, and see what people's wallets say". Whoever it was that pitched the idea was probably too ecstatic to get to work on MML3 to argue that consumers might not be interested in paying for 'something that should be free', as you so eloquently put it.
Why should it be free? Devs are working on the project. They need to get paid, they need to feed their families, pay for rent, just like you or me. The fact that they still have the wiggle room to release 'something as niche as God Hand, Okami, or Killer7' (and at least one of those games is a critical darling, warranting a cheaper spin-off/sequel even thought it wasn't a blockbuster seller) should elicit some respect. Here's a company that seems to be doing what few other big publishers are willing/daring to do, experiment and put out something that isn't your typical AAA fare, in between their big releases, and you're lambasting them for trying to offset the cost.
Maybe I'm wrong, but again, I'm the optimist here.

Also I think that MML has a cult status and some follower but isn't exactly big as a seller... But that's What I heard ... no number to back this up

no it's not, they are totally different beast, MML is more gear towards "cinematic" and "loose" exploration in dungeon ... That latter criteria I think is what it you as better. Also bad control layout but I side step the matter with emulator

Also bad control layout but I side step the matter with emulator Megaman Legends is exploration/adventure-style gameplay with massive interconnected dungeons (something I wish the Zelda series would pick up). The Classic/X series is standard hardcore Capcom platforming. It'd be one thing if Legends was a decent 3D platformer, but it's not a platform game at all. There's not really a clear comparison. They're both great, but about the only thing they have in common are (alternate dimension versions of) Megaman, Roll, and unlockable weapons. And, yeah. Managing the manually controlled camera in Legends 1 was by far the worst part of the game.
