I played a much earlier version than the one you're on(1.06) but it was definitely one of the more enjoyable experiences I've had here in the feedback forum. When I saw the images and envisioned the mechanic, I thought it'd feel a lot more basic and 'flash gamey', and it wasn't. The screen locking mechanic really made it feel like I had a lot of control and made it feel 'not linear' despite it being obviously linear.

The pacing was also great. One of the most important things is to never make people feel frustrated. Most of the times I test games here, if I have to replay a section multiple times, or if failure means "Back to the start, again", or if a major game ending bug occurs, I just throw in the towel. I noticed you made sure to respawn me fairly close to where I died, which made my mistakes less painful, and I rarely felt my deaths hindered me or interrupted the flow of the game. I was also never stuck at a particular obstacle for an unpleasant amount of time.

The only moment that interrupted the flow of the game was waiting for the platforms in certain levels (particularly the one with the vertical lasers). The platform seemed to get lost, and sometimes when i locked the screen the platform would magically appear in an inappropriate place. This issue may have already been addressed, in which case,   Cool.

I had no clue what was up with the stone plug things. If they do something, I didn't figure it out. And since they weren't necessary they sort of distracted me more than they should have.

As far as the controls, the only problem was that sometimes my vertical jump felt like I couldn't change direction and was stuck going vertical. And the small holes with those stone things, I was able to get in them but it was so hard that I wasn't sure if i was even supposed to fit in them.

I think the basic art style is cool. You might want to clean it up/make some fluid animations. Something still minimalist, maybe look at world of goo's art. I admit the screenshots of the game didn't fill me with awe or necessarily make me want to play, which is kind of a problem.

Since you seem to be updating this a lot, I'll make sure to check it out again next update!

When did the voice acting sneak in? It seems pretty cheesy and unnecessary. You explain some of the puzzle elements that someone might have fun figuring out on their own.

Also, I'm going to take this opportunity to complain about the giant text on  the "title screen" thing. It looks pretty silly.

Is the puzzle with the lasers even solvable? Or is it a WIP?

hm, i got stuck on the pigs fly one. i tried to jump back to the 'pig cannon' bit and got stuck in the ceiling..

I skipped to the laser one, but I managed to force the platform somehow into the wall and broke the level Shocked

anyway, that aside it was pretty cool! enjoyed working my way through, altho I agree about the VO. sorry man but you just don't pass as an evil ancient being or whatever it is Smiley

but I had fun which is the main thing!

Downloaded the latest version. The work that has been done on the collision with the platforms makes the whole experience much better. The puzzles with the pigs are very imaginative. Lo-Fi, keep working on this.

Oh hey, I didn't think I would get any feedback for a while, as the thread slipped to the 2nd page!

Anyways, thanks for playtesting new versions, guys.

About the aesthetic stuff (voice acting and title screen): The game will be receiving quite a large overhaul at some point in the future. I don't want to say too much, since a lot of it is undecided, but the voice-over will be cut and the art style will be changed.

tesselode: which level are you referring to with the lasers? Is it the level that first introduces lasers? All of the puzzles in the game should be solvable, so if you could elaborate on what went wrong, that would be great.

RichMakeGame: The pig cannon section is a very recent addition. Could you describe or show where exactly you got stuck? Also, I have seen that platform glitch in the laser level before, I will try to fix it.

kidchameleon: Thanks, glad you liked it!

Edit2: sorry, that version was broken  Angry  I Fixed the new version, here it is!

This version has a bunch of new puzzles. I haven't had anyone playtest these new puzzles at all, so let me know what you guys think!

Oops, I forgot that I added the laser catcher mechanic in the last level without even introducing it first. I redesigned one of the earlier levels now to allow for the introduction of the mechanic.

Wow, it's been a while since I posted a new build.

Here it is, the newest version:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/580413/the_fourth_wall_releases/the_fourth_wall_v2.16.exe

-Controller support should work now
-Pause menu (still not fully functioning, please don't break puzzles by using it)
-New levels and puzzles
-Redesigned levels and puzzles

Let me know what I should change, cut, etc.
Also, I removed the tut icons from the beginning. What do you guys think, will people be able to figure out the controls without the icons?

Well at least have them in a text file or something or a help screen, people who cant figure out the controls can give up before they start... Nice new title screen.

Okay, so I did some work and got some stuff done before I delve into redesigning whole levels/areas. The new updated version is in my original post as well as this one, and the changes include:

-Slowed camera down
-Camera transition now moves on both axes at the same time, instead of one at a time
-Made player character less slippery. It's not perfect right now, but hopefully it's better than a slippery control scheme
-Enter key should work on the pause menu now
-Added controls tutorial back in

I didn't make any level changes yet. Those are coming soon.

I've played the game a lot during the last two days
I think it's a very enjoyable game. Loved the main idea.
Congrats! Wizard

obs: just found some minor colision-related bugs
specially concentred when doing the left/right screen wrap with the character near a wall or something...

Can you tell us which programming language was used? And how many time did it take?

Thank you!

Hey Toad, glad you enjoyed the game! The game is made in Game Maker, and I've been working on it for about 4 months now.

Newest version:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/580413/the_fourth_wall_releases/the_fourth_wall_v2.38.exe

This version addresses any sound issues, as well as any keys disappearing. It will be the last version that I post here for a while.
