I'm writing a paper for a theology class, and I would love to see people's responses. My paper is trying to address why there are so few games that deal with God or have much religious content. I'm wondering how much it is due to game developers not believing in God and thus just having different things on their mind.

Thanks for taking the poll!

Hey, an atheist here.

You might like to dig a bit, there was a religion thread recently, lots of talk over there. Also, you might like to check out the design sub-forum (a sub-forum of creative sub-forum), there is an active thread on lack of games about religion.

And, finally, being a pedant here - I think "agnostic" should not be in the list if there is "atheist" already, because it doesn't deal with belief but knowledge. This is because atheists are always agnostic. But who knows, some people still like to be labeled as "agnostic" rather than "atheist". (:

What an interesting topic you have brought up, jeffrobot. I definitely think that in this postmodern society, we see more people questioning their own religions, thus more people are becoming irreligious. At the same time, however, we may be seeing the rise of a universal religion, the Baha'i faith, which is still very small, but grows gradually. For the moment, we will continue to see very secular means, with religion remaining limited in video games.

That and the fact that religious people (i.e. Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, etc.) do not find much of an interest in producing games, or games that are nonsecular.

there was just a big poll about this

also there's going to be some disagreement over what atheist and agnostic means. i never really got into the old discussion of it, but to me it's a sliding scale. atheists don't "know" for certain that there's no god, they just don't believe in one, and don't think it's likely that one exists. agnostics, on the other hand, believe it's just as likely as one exists as it is that one doesn't exist, or more likely. whereas atheists believe that god might exist, but the likelihood of it is very very low.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for voting and replying - I really appreciate it. And thanks a ton to whoever it was that posted the link to the bigger poll thread. That is incredibly helpful.

atheist = "not a theist"
i.e. doesn't believe in any god
Theism pertains to belief.

This doesn't mean that an atheist necessarily holds a "belief that there are no gods" which is a different thing. Simply that they're not convinced by theists' claims.

Gnosticism pertains to "knowledge".

Atheism and agnosticism aren't mutually exclusive. (i.e. one could be an agnostic atheist, gnostic theist, agnostic theist, etc)

EDIT:

See: http://wiki.ironchariots.org/index.php?title=Atheist_vs._agnostic

^ Article w/ explanations and a table. Also a good resource for arguments for/against god(s).
