I've always loved the multiplayer in Scorched Earth, and while this game is different it's very much in that spirit. This game is a single screen, single computer deathmatch game.

A friend and I started this game for the Ludum Dare event last weekend. It's been rather all consuming, but I'm really enjoying it and I'm very happy with how the game is turning out. I thought I'd post a few images and tell people about it.

I hope a few folks out there who love single computer multiplayer as much as I do will get some use out of this.

Yes!

Seriously, this sounds like fun!
What are you coding it in/with? (please say something platform independent)

I loooooove the wall textures, they are gorgeous.  By chance are the lighter patches some form of lighting effect?

I think it's supposed to be ice. There are icicles(?) hanging from the roof.

Freeze gun?  Grin

Oh, a freeze gun is a fun idea, we should think about that. I'll add it to the idea list.

DementedChicken-
We're using Flash, which is both a blessing and a curse. It's going to be distributed as an executable, probably open source.

Open source!? really?
Awesome!

This looks like it would be great for blowing off steam after a stressful day.

This is not a screen shot. I was doing a first pass on the flaming death animation.

My collaborator works full time, so we haven't had much time in which to make things together. I've been trying to keep the project rolling without stepping on his toes- I hope I've succeeded. The game is certainly moving along, but the degree to which his toes have been damaged has yet to be ascertained.

This evening I experimentally added a weapon which fires slow, arcing explosives. That is why the inside of this elevator shaft is covered in red goo.

Another thing I did today is put some time into the corpse effects. I had fun playing with a system which uses floppy segmented corpses. This second image, taken during testing earlier today, shows little yellow vertical lines in the center of each segment so it's easier to see how they hug the terrain.

Could we be able to kick corpses at other opponents?

If you know the relationship between the corpse parts you could totally have them slide down slopes slowly. Smiley

I've added a new weapon. It fires arcing, bouncy projectiles. I'm excited by these. We needed more weapons that work without a direct line of sight. They were a lot of fun to make. These projectiles are good for flooding into lower areas. One can also get a running start and fling them horizontally; they are affected by the player's velocity.

This was a good excuse to improve the bouncing physics (which were already in use by one weapon, but crudely hacked in and sloppy feeling). This image shows a grenade trail in test mode. The yellow and white lines indicate the angle of the surface at each bounce. There are still a couple of bugs to fix, but it's working pretty well.

Impressive!

Is it going to have some kind of a multiplayer?

Bouncy, indirect weapons are always a blast in multi.

Looking good so far, Sparky!

Gabriel-
Thank you. It's a lot of fun to draw pictures and have them turn into playable environments, and it's really easy to make content. A few of my friends are making levels for the first release.

Goshki-
Yes, the entirety of the game is single computer multiplayer. There is no single player game at all. Everyone shares a single non-scrolling view. The screen looks like this during a match:
