Pick the option closest to what you run, and only for your main screen if you are running more than one monitor. I know there are plenty of odd laptop resolutions, but a poll with 10,000 options would be quite diluted.

This is just out of curiosity really, and I figure the information could be useful to other indies who are wondering what resolutions are safe to develop games for. I wasn't quite sure which forum would be most appropriate, so General it is!

The game we're working on defaults to 1280x720. It's a scaled up 428x240, because we'll be targeting consoles and eventually phones, and now I am wondering if it'll commonly be too large for many screens.

Or just make your game scale up to the nearest integer amount that would fill the players screen. (Provided it's pixel-art based!)

That's something I'd be interested in doing. But I've found that when I dual-monitor, The mouse is, frankly, a pain in the ass to drag all the way from screen to screen. Maybe two mice, two monitors?

try turning your mouse speed up to maximum (it's under control panel), and try buying the logitech mini optical mouse: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-930732-0403-Mini-Optical-Mouse/dp/B00006HMPF -- it has a reputation as the fastest mouse in the world (it's ultra light and glides across surfaces easily) and is the preferred mouse of professional starcraft and starcraft 2 players; i have one and it's wonderful (although i bought it when it was cheaper -- it's 50$ now because they don't make them any more and it's a collector's item, but when i got it it was only 30$) -- if you do both of those things you'll have no mouse speed problems across 2 monitors, or 10 monitors. i literally just move my wrist a few degrees and the mouse goes from the left side of the left monitor to the right side of the right monitor (both monitors are 1920x1080)

that said you don't have to create the game such that the mouse *needs* to constantly go between the two monitors, it could work like nintendo DS games do, where one monitor is for the map and menu / subscreen, and the other monitor is for the play screen

I don't know how representative of the general public that is, but it shouldn't be too far off.

Those ideas sound filled with win.

The absolute majority of Full-HD res or more is really unexpected to me  Undecided
I tought that most players used notebooks or regular cheap computer monitors, and in fact the only guys I know to have FullHD monitors are the iMac owners.
Can we know the kind of guys that downloaded your game?  Beer!

To be in topic: I run two monitors, 1400x900 and 1280x1024.

I didn't ask them personal questions but I got some stats from the website that might give some indication as to the kinds of people who downloaded the game. Shrug

Location
United States - 42.75%
Canada - 8.00%
United Kingdom - 6.88%
Russia - 4.21%
Poland - 3.39%
Australia - 3.25%
Germany - 3.14%
Spain - 2.43%
France - 2.21%

Downloaders referred from
indiegames.com - 38.2%
reddit.com - 26.28%
bay12forums.com - 7%
twitter.com - 3.63%
forums.somethingawful.com - 3.45%
linux.org.ru - 3.19%
google.com - 3.12%
2g1g.thepodkast.com - 2.75%
lgdb.org - 2.38%
facebook.com - 1.5%
forums.tigsource.com - 1.03%

Although this is slightly wrong as I also put the files on indiedb.com and the downloads from there would put it just above the bay12forums.com. And yes that is correct only 1% of downloaders came from TIGForums Sad

Ook so it looks like that in US/UK FullHD resolutions are just everywhere. I might need to keep that in mind for future games, that's unexpected  Droop
Here in Italy, spending that much money for a PC monitor is just crazy, *rant about Italy's backwardness*.

24" 1920x1200 as my main display, with a 1280x1024 secondary display attached. Though that's going to be replaced with a 42" 1920x1080 TV this week, mainly because my GPU doesn't support connecting more than two displays at the same time Sad Besides those, I also have two unused 15" 1024x768 LCD monitors hanging around. I'll probably buy a new main 24" 1920x1200 display late in the summer when I'll be updating my whole computer and keep my current main display around as a secondary monitor.
