Here in Italy, spending that much money for a PC monitor is just crazy

1080p monitors are crazy inexpensive right now, it's crazy *not* to buy one (or, preferably, two). you can get 23" or 24" ones for about $150, often with free shipping

plus, as a game developer, it's a great investment: more code can fit on the screen, which has been shown to increase productivity (multiple monitors also have been shown to increase productivity). if i were just using a computer to play games, i might settle for a smaller monitor, but if you spend any amount of time working on games each day or writing code, the expense more than will pay for itself in terms of how much more work you can get done

I'm fairly surprised by the prevalance of 5:4 displays. Maybe a lot of those are laptops? I don't think I've ever used a desktop monitor with a 5:4 aspect ratio.

where do you see 5:4 in there? i see 3:4 and 16:9 and 16:10

Yep. Technically outnumbered by the other ratios, but that one resolution in particular seems to be very popular.

hmm -- i'm not familiar with any 5:4 monitors either, so perhaps it's just a laptop thing. i do know that crt's that are 3:4 do at least support that resolution, it's just that things look a bit stretched in it. crt monitors in particular support a wide variety of weird resolutions -- 2048x1152 (which is on the list once) was the max resolution of my previous 21" crt monitor (which i had to replace because it got blurry over the years, but when it was new it was unbeatable by any lcd)

It's not a laptop thing. 1280x1024 was a very popular screen format before widescreen became dominant. Actually, judging from the stats on my website, it still is.

This is total crap man, I've got dual 1080p screens and the second monitor is used almost exclusively for slacking off. "Stuck on a problem? I'd better go check reddit/facebook/etc..."

individual cases may vary of course -- the study was about overall productivity over a large number of people. of course there will be individual people for whom it doesn't work as well. in my case at least it increased productivity

the left screen i use for the task list for my game, for other design documentation, and for file folders (in this case, it's open to the sound folder for the game, which has information i need to know for coding purposes)

on the right screen is game maker, obviously, with various script windows open

I tend to sit my laptop next to my desktop monitor and use it as a sort of second monitor, as there is barely room on my desktop for my 1920.
