How can you like Wizardry but not EO? They're basically the same game, except Wizardry is even more "repetitive", "grind-based" and "frustrating."

I don't like the fact that my party is made up of lolis and the super boring quests among other things. The touch screen mapping is annoying at best, and while the graphics are really nice other than the portraits, it doesn't leave much to the imagination. As far as Atlus' new ones I like The Dark Spire and SMT: Strange Journey. Speaking of which I'm going to go play the latter.

I dunno, I like the touchscreen mapping in EO, it's pretty satisfying save for the tutorial at the beginning. I prefer the approach of the old Wizardry games though, i.e. no in-game map at all. For me, having to be careful and getting to know the level layouts (which some people mistake for "repetitive grinding") is part of the appeal of these games and adding dynamic in-game maps sort of takes that away.
EO's system is a decent compromise. But then again, so is The Dark Spire's (not developed by Atlus btw), which is a better game overall I think. Also, Strange Journey is a pretty great game despite the dynamic maps, so...

I absolutely LOVE 1st person Dungeon Crawlers and one game (or more!) of this kind is in my todo list. Actually I had already started doing it in "semi-3d", but the programmer quit http://www.youtube.com/v/8FwynbJg4eQ?version=3

I like Ultima Underworld and Arx Fatalis.
Me too, me too. Same thing, sheldons. I really liked being able to draw new enemies/shtuff.

I think the more dungeon crawlers, the better. Just makes yours unique.

so how does one go about making these with a 2D engine? I always wondered that and came with an idea for one, but have no idea how to do it.

Holy... That's sweet Is it realtime 3D or prerendered? [EDIT] Oh, it's realtime 3D, nice... A good combination of realtime 3D graphic with old style gridded movement dungeon crawler.
