me too. it would only add up if you had a pretty popular site, in which case shared hosting probably isn't the best thing for you anyway

hostgator is quite good, alternatively if you can spend more I recommend liquidweb. They have just announced "smart VPS" which is cloud VPS: http://www.liquidweb.com/cart/content/vps/
VPS.NET also has some interesting cloud VPS: http://www.vps.net/product/cloud-hosting

I've enjoyed my hosting at namecheap.com.

I'm using nearly free speech primarily because of their awesome service and simple interface, but it's far from cheap.

you can offset bandwidth by serving images from imageshack instead of nfs servers

I would make sure to keep an eye on bandwidth if you use nearlyfreespeech. My dreamhost account ended up using 80GB over a few months when what seems to be a rather crazy botnet downloaded my AGBIC game 300,000 times. NFS also isn't too cheap if you upload large files.

I find dreamhost nice, largely because I can create an SVN repository for whatever I want to. Do most webhosts have SVN? I don't really know. Dreamhost is a bit more expensive than some options, though.

I don't think hostgator has SVN, and I believe it's not really a common feature, even if I personally don't use SVN Smiley

I've heard very good comments about HostMonster, especially for the customer support,in fact I'm planning to transfer my website to them very soon.

As far as pricing goes, GoDaddy can be incredibly frustrating. They nickel and dime you for everything (e.g. mail, hosting, private registration, etc). So I wouldn't recommend hosting with them for this reason. But their sales reps are always top-notch. I use them for domain registration most of the time, and someone from GoDaddy just called me out of the blue and said, "I was looking at your account and it looks like you're signed up for an Economy hosting plan that you aren't using at all." I said, "Oh yeah, I don't remember signing up for that. Will you cancel it for me?" "Sure."

So besides the fact that the GoDaddy website tricked me into signing up for a hosting plan, it's nice that the sales reps have my back.

that would be my favourite part about dreamhost, you can set up multiple svn accounts. I can do that on site5 but I have to do it manually.

I'm gonna try HostGator. They have a money back guarantee, so that's good. Also, I now have my own little domain (tesselode.com) and I will hopefully eventually add everything to the site. We'll see if HostGator can stay up for more than an hour.

I too had a good experience with nearlyfreespeech, at least so far without a lot of traffic.
