A lot of heroes are getting the "Other M" Treatment. Have you seen the new Dante for the next "Devil May Cry" Title? They turned a badass antihero into a whiny emo with Anorexia.

To be honest, we don't really know what they've done with the character, other than give him a more serious and gloomy makeover. We don't know if he's going to be a whiny punk, because we haven't even seen proper gameplay footage.

On that note, I can't really say anything about how they'll portray Lara Croft, but considering the press material is emphasizing that she'll "become a survivor", I'm crossing my fingers for the best.

I am curious about this game where I haven't been really curious about any other tomb raider game since, like... 2. If they change Lara's personality I won't mind because I never played enough of the original games to figure out what, if anything, her personality was.

I like that the new Lara actually looks like an actual human being conceivably might.

For some reason, it's interesting to me that they seem to have made a conscious decision to give Lara visible bra straps. I noticed that in an early pr shot and then it suddenly stood out to me as weird that a video game had never given me opportunity to notice such a thing before. Video games are always putting women in gum-wrapper clothing, but female game characters never seem to be wearing bras despite usually doing highly acrobatic stuff that would both (1) necessitate a bra, and (2) make it somewhat difficult to keep the bra straps from migrating. I started looking around and the only other game character I could find with visible bra straps was Chelle from Portal 2.

Note: Any attempt by the Tomb Raider Other M developers to restore dignity to by giving her a more realistic appearance has now been totally undercut by me spending all this time staring at / thinking about her bra

So, from what I understand, the Lara in the new game is supposed to be a younger, less experienced one than the double-uzi toting, somersaulting death machine players are acquainted with - which, sure, might be more believable, but at the same time, as Gilbert says, can very likely lead to the OtherMification of the character (no longer confident, self-reliant, etc, and instead being portrayed as having huge daddy issues/ being "more vulnerable"), which, honestly, is a huge step backward for the character.

Not that I'm a huge fan of the Lara Croft games, but if this becomes a trend I might have to start going round kicking people in the balls.

speaking of that, a gun in each hand is like the worst part of videogames, nobody in real life can use a gun in each hand and shoot them at the same time and hit anything

it's an interesting example of something that's prevalent in fiction but ridiculous in real life: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_wield

So what we need is someone dual-wielding pistols with silencers that make thwip noises when you shoot them.

Notice that other M is not thye new tomb raider's name! It's a reference to metroid other M.
I can't be bothered to look up the actual name!

Knowing tomb raider it's probably something like Tomb Raider: Myth of the Ancients

yeah but with dragons and magic and immortals it's in a fantasy context, dual guns are often in 'real life' contexts, with nothing else imaginary

There is a reason fiction are fictions

It's because they're fiction, right?

It's because they're fiction, right?

I think it's along this line or maybe it's just fictions after all Huh? can't really decide about this tautological statement Huh?

But you may never know for Mr Eres to twist it:

Perhabs fiction are not that fictional after all, because they take cues from reality, therefore they are real  Who, Me? For you to know something is fiction, it mean that you have experience it, would you say that experience is not real? Fiction are just another part of reality, they exist and they are real, you can recognize elements of fiction and even describe them, and they can impact you in way that connect with you emotionally...

... oh wait dragon and magic are real after all  My Word!

cool, a discussion about reality and video games. let's discuss how the word reality relates to video games. let's have a good honest discussion, you stinking fucker. i lie in the tall grass, barely 3 clicks out from the HitlerSphere, planning my attack. it's a dog eat dog world, and i intend to eat dog. "give me some of that boshintang motherfucker," i say aloud to nobody in particular. we, as a people, like to place barriers between ourselves and our ingrained barbarism. a feminised society builds walls to shield us from ourselves. your whopper is the product of murder. it took no great valiant effort from yourself to slay the cow. a brave man in a white uniform did it for you. he took the lives of many cows that day. they say war is hell. well. let me tell you something. war is simply the acknowledgement of competition, the much more devastating and long-lasting act of conquest is happening all around us, at all times. we occupy a special place in this world, the role of the apex predator, and we do not intend to relinquish our grasp. we are fighting constantly. Top Dog, That's Me, Eating The Other, Lower Dogs. a consistent and terrible murder.

Far as I can tell, it's just Tomb Raider. Reboot and all.

I went to a panel on Women in Video Games, because as a very progressive thinker who has only the highest opinion of women this panel greatly interested me.  I was surprised to see that many of them did not have any gripes with Laura Croft.  They acknowledged she was a sex symbol, and in her earlier years looked a bit inhuman for the sake of sex appeal, but they overall said she was a good example of a female character in video games.  The reason being is that she was capable.  She was able to do the things that were required of her, was very rich and successful, and regardless of her appearance and her gender was able to exist in the world create for her as a capable and functional character.  Now, it seems as thought this reboot seeks to strip her of that, which seems to be a very bad move.

And I'm sorry, no amount of reboots can erase THIS from my mind...
