yes but as the old saying goes: try to please everyone and you please no one. its possible that the big n is biting off more than they can chew and that the wii u is going to be a jumbled mess of features that dont really fit together

They're not biting off anything.  This is nothing.

Let me see I am getting this right.

Current Wii U exposed features:

A much larger wiimote replacement that has a screen which can interact with the main console display somewhat, the actual degree of interaction is unspecified, so far only shown to point at stuff.
The controller has an accelerometer and shit, making it a handheld of sorts as well.
The launch lineup contains a bunch of non exclusive third party franchises.
It has network service and shit akin to the ps3 and xbox.

Anything else?

Nintendo farted around the topic and didn't reveal the actual system, instead opting to refer to it as a controller.

Here it is. It's a console, not a portable that streams games to your TV.

Okay, so you hold a two handed wiimote? I hope the window thing allows us to see either a different overlay (like maybe xray cam, or extended pseudo reality by pointing it outsite the tv screen edges) becaus eotherwise that would be clunky as hell.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that you can't see any pictures of it.

It looks like a wacom tablet, wide and flat, with a 6 inch touchscreen in the middle. There are traditional buttons on the right hand side, a d-pad on the left hand side, and dual analogs on either side above the buttons and the d-pad. There are also L and R buttons on the top, and L and R triggers underneath. It is easily Nintendo's most conventional controller to date, if you discount the abnormally large touchscreen in the middle. If you ignore the touchscreen for the moment, it would be easy to see people playing conventional XBox 360 or PS3 titles with this new controller.

At the same time, this controller has all the same accelerometer features as the original Wii-mote. It also seems to be able to detect specific orientation in relation to the television screen. It streams video from the WiiU console without detectable lag.

They announced that Arkham city is going to be released on WiiU. I can already see about a dozen interesting ways in which you could use this controller for that game. You could use the "window" feature to inspect scenes with detective vision. (instead of swapping out the overall view, just hold the controller up)

id be interested in the hardware specs. its great that the wii u can apparently run current ps360 games but will it also be able to run ps4/xbox whatever multiplat games in the future? if not, this is a really half assed and inconsequential attempt by nintendo to shut up whining "hardcore gamers" who bought a wii and as soon as next gen rolls around, theyre gonna retreat to their comfy casual/fanboy ghetto again.

I dunno how Reggie was able to give all that "Welcome to the world of Wii... U" speech with a straight face. That's a talent right there.

This picture was showed at the presentation. In the background though.

EDIT: Okay, Timmy beat me to it.

Just imagine what games you get. RTS games with a common fighting area on the TV (king of the hill/TV). Racing and sport games with spectator TV. Crazy card and board games. This will allow games to integrate a secret view per player - this is a revolution of living room gaming. Egoshooters with friends on the couch without splitcreen.

Oh my gosh, just think about the possibilities. With the touchscreen controls, you could select units even faster than with a mouse. For planning out large-scale movements, you hold the controller up to the main map on the TV, and "draw" your troop movements there.

The possibilities are endless.

Yeah, UI-based games will LOVE the new controller. I always wondered why nobody made a console with a touchscreen-controller earlier.
