The problem with this screen-in-the-controller thing is that it's really offering a solution to something that didn't need fixing in the first place.

So did the DS, and the Wii, and for that matter, the iPhone.

You could always stick with the familiar, the conventions that you are accustomed to.

But sometimes it is actually good to try something a little different, and see if it sticks.

And given the extremely traditional control schemes that the other consoles were built around, is there any real harm in a third competitor going down the road less traveled?

The Wiimote is the Fisher Price guitar of videogames.

No actually the Guitar Hero controller is but you catch my drift.

I like it as a modern NES controller and as a pointer.

My primary problem with this new controller is that I personally don't want to constantly have to look down from the tv screen to the controller and back up again. If a game is designed properly, you never look down at the controller in your hands -- your fingers know the correct positions. The two screens on the DS work because they're close together on a small handheld device. You only have to switch your eyes up and down a bit. Unless you're holding the Wii U controller up in front of you, you can't do that (and no way you'll be holding the Wii U controller up in front of you all the time -- your arms will start shaking in minutes).

The streaming thing seems kinda interesting, but if your in your house anyway, why not play the game on your big HD tv instead of the small screen on the controller?

Quote
One of the big draws of Nintendo's new Wii U console is the fact it can stream games to a controller and also use that controller as a secondary screen. While Wii U won't be out until 2012, though, this iPad game can do it a lot sooner.

Real Racing 2 HD, already one of the most attractive and full-featured games available for download on Apple's Store, gets a little more fancy in the near future when it adds the ability to play without wires on a TV using the iPad as a controller.

You'll need something that supports Apple's AirPlay feature, and will have to wait until iOS 5 is released, but once those two things are in the can you can use the iPad as both a controller and an augmented display.

PWNED

It better have the Lan multiplayer or else ...
They were right to target apple as a competitor, the battle will be fierce.
Also apple is accessible to indie ... not nintendo ... and they are more likely to innovate. Thanks nintendo to give us cool idea or to use this.

The Ipad has no tactile feedback in the form of buttons, and less advanced graphics, so it probably won't be a major threat. I think the NGP+Playstation combo has a lot more potential to damage Nintendo, since they have a similar gimmick right from the get-go (rather than the years it took for the Move/Kinect to be released). The Vita is also easier to hold than the Wii U controller, and it's transfarring-enabled whereas the Wii U controller depends on proximity.

Yep but it's like the ds vs the psp, strong brand, cheap game, good enough graphics. What i mean is they are in direct competition on the same market, apple update hardware way more frequently too and is actually portable.

Consider me not interested this time, i pass.

That's true. However, I personally have no interest in buying an iPad. I would rather just use a PC, or buy one of the major manufacturers' systems that have exclusive games. I guess that the PS4/Vita combo would be out of most peoples' price range initially, which would be their greatest problem. I don't plan on buying any new-gen consoles until they become cheap. And that's not because I'm broke. Yes it is.

It really depend on how much they can convert the wii install base into upgrading to wii U. How much value the console have for people whithout core gaming sensibilities?

For the purposes of comparing the iPad directly to the features of the WiiU, this is irrelevant.

The iPad by itself will likely still cost more than the entire WiiU does at launch.

As appealing as the iPad is, it isn't really going to be in direct competition with the WiiU. The WiiU is a dedicated games console, and it's touchscreen controller won't operate independently from the console. The iPad is a general purpose, portable device. Despite some of the comparisons, they are two very different devices, with different uses.

And if you really want a touchscreen + television gaming experience, are you going to drop $600+ on an iPad + AppleTV combo that few developers are going to support? Or are you just going to buy a WiiU? (that you know will be backed by all of Nintendo's first-party development, bare minimum)

I would love to see more software that got the devices I already own working together more, but realistically there aren't ever going to be many iPad apps that would make use of the touch screen tablet + TV concept like Wii U would, simply because developers will know with Wii U that the tablet is what you take for granted as being part of the platform and people will be expecting it to be used.

In the end, every console sucess depends on two things: the games and pirating the games, and... console price.

IF Wii U gets nice console exclusives that really kick ass and one or two big sleeper hits, I think It will be sucess.

I would love a FF 7 remake for that console but I know I'm dreaming.  Sad Sad Sad

If this thing only allows one pad controller, I hope it at least supports a full four Wiimotes in addition to the pad, allowing for 5-player games.  A D&D-style game where the player with the pad is the DM could be pretty cool.

I think the Wii U is definitely not aimed at total immersion. The original "Project Cafe" name was perfect because it implied casual "enjoy yourself with friends" gaming over hardcore, "experience what war with aliens would really be like" gaming.
