Hey guys,

Just had some free time on my hands yesterday and wanted to try this for a while. I quickly made 2 tests, heavily inspired by Minecraft, would love to know what you guys think.

Note that all of those graphics are placeholders. Most of them are from Survivors of Ragnarok (http://www.indiedb.com/games/survivors-of-ragnarok/page/2#comments). Love their project and quickly needed something to try this, so it fit Smiley Hope nobody gets angry now, haha.

Here's the initial test:

Try it here:

Here's the 3d version of it:

Try it here:
http://www.warsoup.com/builds/sein/minecrafty3d.html

CONTROLS:

Arrow Keys: Move
X: Mine
Z: Rotate Camera (3d Version only!)
ScrollWheel: Zoom
B: Hide Bag(not working)
I: Inventory(not working)

(Nevermind the controls at the bottom of the webplayer, the html is for a different game)

You can't really do anything yet other than destroying blocks (bring the highlight on a block and press X repeatedly), even though there's more shit under the hood, just not accessible in the runtime yet.

The idea was to make soemthing Minecraft'ish, on a 2d plane. I think the 2d version already feels kinda neat, with more stuff in it, it could definitely become a cool game to play. After I was done with that, I started thinking that cubes instead of planes could still be cool - and then I thought of Fez and made the 3d version. I think the 3d version has quite a bit of potential. The character controller would have to become 3d, more like the 3d Marios, but at that point it could pretty much be a third person Minecraft.

Anyway, would like to know what you guys think, which version you prefer.

control would be cool if it was more fez-like. you always move around like it was a 2d platformer but the z key changed between the x and z axis so that it worked in 90 degree increments. perhaps you could jump between planes too a la guardian heroes to make it a little easier to traverse the land.

I think blending Minecraft / Fez sounds really cool, but there's a whole lot of trouble with making this work properly. If you have a large block in the center and you hammer into that block, you can just obscure yourself with blocks and not really see anything from multiple perspectives. And it'd always be very fiddly to figure out on which grid space you're currently on - not to mention that the camera would also be a big problem. I think it's one of those 'cool to look at it, not much fun to play it' things.

Maybe someone smarter than me figures it out at some point Smiley
