Cyngus
Download (PC version):
Download (Linux version):
Hey guys! I Just uploaded a Linux build of Cygnus, a game I made about a year ago. It's a cave-flyer in the style of Gravitar or Thrust. Gravitar was always one of those childhood games I played a lot. My point was to make Gravitar, but a little more adventurey. And I never liked the shooting so I took it out and made the level design not dependent on shooting anything, so your only interaction with the world is moving around and through it. Let me know if I succeeded in keeping it fun! I built it in Ubuntu using OpenFrameworks, if it doesn't work on your distro let me know and I'll send you the source code to build it yourself. -------Controls------ Left/Right - Turn Up - Thrust Space - Pause some screenshots.. Any feedback is much appreciated! ...also if you could rate it on gameJolt that would be cool.

First of all I loved the old school graphics. The exploration style of the game was also nice and I would have loved to play more except for the fact that its too easy to speed out of control and hit a wall or an enemy. Unfortunately the speed issue made it unplayable for me after the fourth room. This has a lot of potential and I would love to play it more with a less slippery control scheme.

May I ask, does it feel like the speed is ramping up to going to fast, or is it that as soon as you hit the thrust key it's bolting forward? I'm asking cause I'm trying to figure out if it's a control scheme issue or a frame rate one.

I love this, to me the whole point of the game is that its hard to control the ship and avoid the walls.
I also liked the introduction screens, telling me how to control the ship, the fuel and the conservation of momentum between screens.
I LOVE EVERY SINGLE BIT OF THIS GAME
Keep up the good work, the only thing I would say, is give it a darker colour scheme, to make it more like an old arcade cabinet.

Okay, I gave up during that 'escape sequence' in the green spiral level. If you think that there could be a framerate dependency, then there must be one; the ship rotates way too slowly for me, which makes it nearly impossible to turn around quickly enough to slow down in some particular cases. I have played, and am not terrible at, Thrust, so I can tell you that this plays way slower than older gravity games like it.
I appreciate the aesthetics a lot; there's a whimsical hand-drawn feel superimposed to the '80s computery stuff that makes it visually very attractive. The music is indeed quite fitting and nice, as well; spacey, slightly glitchy, computery soundscapes. Very cool.

Just completed the game. Things I liked:- I liked the sound effects and music. They fit well with the graphical style.
- Nice variety of obstacles. The game didn’t feel too repetitive.
- No silly time-wasting tutorials, intros or other crap. Just press Enter and the game starts. Learn as you play. I love it. I hope it remains like that.
- Overall the simplicity of the game was nice.
Things I didn’t like:- A bit too easy. The only difficult level was the spirally one where cracks appeared in front of the ship. It didn’t get much more difficult after that.
- (A minor gripe:) The window was a bit too small, even though my desktop resolution isn’t exactly huge (1280×1024, 19" monitor). A fullscreen option would be nice.
Nice work and keep it up!

o man thanks guys. I really appreciate it. jmp, totally agree on the window size thing. I was originally planning on it being an iphone game, but decided against that cause I don't have a mac lol anyway the 'level' size is the iphone's resolution and it totally is to small. I don't really know what I want to do with it though, should I just scale it to screen size? It feels weird.

The thread title is easily misleading; I read it as a distribution of Linux called "Cygnus" having been released. Recommend renaming to "Cygnus released on Linux". Granted, this is a feedback forum for games, but still. Avoid ambiguity where possible.

The linux version, looks like the executable is compiled for 64 bits machines. Doesnt work in a 32 one.
