So,
Banished has spread like a rash all over the underside of el Internets this week. It's one of the few games in recent years that has really got me hyped (obviously, as my post count and consistency would suggest). So let's chat about it!
What are your initial impressions?
What are your hopes for the game?
Do you want combat?
For me, I'm hoping for a fresh, "indie" take on some nostalgic mechanics. Some of my most relaxing, addictive, and fun gaming moments came from Impressions Games city building series (you know, Caesar, Zeus, Emperor, and the like). It was straightforward enough to be simple, but deep enough to not feel cheap. It wasn't DF but it was pretty and free enough to be either a fun campaign to pick up and put down, or a massive simulation. So I hope to find some similar things with Banished: that "okay, just one more minute" feeling as you await the harvest or a construction or whatever and then realize you're late for work.
I love the graphics (especially the environment), the minimalism of the UI (though that will likely change), and the emphasis on weather and survival. I really hope that combat plays a tiny, tiny role as well. I would just get annoyed in other such games when I _had_ to build my army up because the Barbarians were coming.
Other thoughts?
