So, Banished has spread like a rash all over the underside of el Internets this week. It's one of the few games in recent years that has really got me hyped (obviously, as my post count and consistency would suggest). So let's chat about it!

What are your initial impressions?
What are your hopes for the game?
Do you want combat?

For me, I'm hoping for a fresh, "indie" take on some nostalgic mechanics. Some of my most relaxing, addictive, and fun gaming moments came from Impressions Games city building series (you know, Caesar, Zeus, Emperor, and the like). It was straightforward enough to be simple, but deep enough to not feel cheap. It wasn't DF but it was pretty and free enough to be either a fun campaign to pick up and put down, or a massive simulation. So I hope to find some similar things with Banished: that "okay, just one more minute" feeling as you await the harvest or a construction or whatever and then realize you're late for work.

I love the graphics (especially the environment), the minimalism of the UI (though that will likely change), and the emphasis on weather and survival. I really hope that combat plays a tiny, tiny role as well. I would just get annoyed in other such games when I _had_ to build my army up because the Barbarians were coming.

Other thoughts?

yeah not really sure why this is getting hyped... i quite like sedate building games but this doesn't look all that interesting to me really

also why are all the journos making a big deal out of that it's being made by 1 dude?

how is it different from the similar games like "settlers"?
I tried watching the video but i's too boring.
The familial aspect could be interesting, but I don't know if it's really develloped there.
A game like that would be more interesting if it didn't take 30 minutes to build a house, for example one group of men should not be able to build more than a few houses in their lives and also more realistic birth rates etc.. mixed with minecraft-like openworldness, exploration and personalized characters with their own lives

I never gave any of the Settlers games a shot. Might have to do that now!

Considering both are on gog, which one would you recommend? Is there any reason to pick the original over the remake?

not that i remember. i think the remake is literally just the original with modern gfx. but its been a long time since i played the original, so i might be missing some of the finer points.

Not really sure about civilization building games all the time, sometimes they hit the spot with me but most of the time they don't give me the game fix. I do like how it looks though, lots of work has gone into it obviously. I will probably give it a shot when it comes out though.

I like that it's not overdesigned. Looks good.

I remember not being able to play original one on modern setup (both software and hardware compatibility problems) so I would get the new one.
