news on the SDK. It will cost 99$
Free would have been better, but $99 isn't bad. It is at least competitive with Apple's fee for iOS development. And it definitely seems like that's what Sony is aiming for.

though tbh im not sure how successful "smartphone" type games are going to be on this thing. i mean the reason smartphone games sell well is because theyre on multifunctional devices most people buy for other stuff. i doubt anyone really buys a smartphone just to play games, and by extension i cant imagine anyone buying a vita to play $1 "appstore" games on it (or use it as a phone for that matter). so yeah i think if theyre trying to pull the casual crowd with this move its kinda misguided.

And what about the people who buy the Vita for games? There's nothing wrong with them offering up a selection of low-cost games to those consumers. And what does it cost them to offer an SDK like this? If it pays for itself in PSN purchases, then they come out ahead. The Vita certainly isn't going to start overshadowing the iPhone just because of this. No one in their right mind would think so. But that doesn't mean it's a bad thing for Sony to be opening up their various platforms to a bit of small-scale development. You can be sure that any iOS developers who can afford to will want to get their existing titles up and running for PSN, just like many of them have ported their games to Android.

i meant as the main reason for purchasing a vita. yeah fair enough they'll sell some additional games to their existing audience but theyre not going to draw in any new people, esp in light of the whole "smartphones killing dedicated handhelds" thing going on right now. i really want the vita to do well because i love the system from a hardware standpoint and want to see as many good games as possible on it.

What would be misguided would be not having those kinds of games on Vita. Are you overlooking the iPod touch? People do buy that for games. The major advantage small games have is the way people buy them on impulse, but they also give gameplay that more traditional games don't seem to, that people do want. It's a market that expanded rapidly while traditional games stagnated. They might not be a main reason for buying a Vita, but I think not having them would count against it when people were making a decision about whether it was worth the money. So I think the Vita would be weakened in winning ground against other devices if Sony didn't make it possible to develop those kinds of games for it.

Smartphones aren't killing dedicated handhelds, they are simply supplanting them as the preferred method of gaming on the go. Dedicated gaming handhelds are always going to have certain advantages over touch-screen powered smartphones...they're called buttons. Some types of gaming experiences just aren't possible with touchscreens, and in that regard, there will always be a market for dedicated gaming handhelds. Smartphones are simply becoming the dominant market leaders. Developers need to learn to accept this and move with the times.

Has anyone got Katamari and tried to access the DLC? The levels section of the store has been empty in launch, in Europe. I can't believe it's not been fixed yet.

The way I see it is they're trying to make off it to profit and support it, but also want the entry price to be accessible, so they look to the format that has been widely accepted elsewhere to help bring in developers. Plus I'd call it an even better deal for the $99. Because, hell, Vita! "Hey look here, aspiring small game devs! For the same price you can make games for THE VITA " Also: I tried Gravity Rush at game stop. Holy balls this shit is awesome.

Do people really buy iPods because of the games? I personally have yet to see that.
