The Deer Hunter is a long movie, a bit too long. There are a lot of moments Cimino could have cut out. For instance the wedding was so dragged out and a lot of the time there were no character development. It's a great movie though, De Niro at his most handsome.

if you want to make a movie about apartheid, actually make it about apartheid, and don't give me a headache.

Super boring - don't waste your money. Very cliche. You are pretty much describing most horror films. You kind of have to be picky with that genre and look up reviews in advance.

best movie ever! I really liked District 9 the first time I saw it, but somehow it had lost all of its impact on the second viewing. Maybe it's one of those movies you have to be in the right mood to enjoy. I'm actually having that happen with a lot of stuff these days... Finding Nemo was one of my favorite Pixar movies for the longest time, and I was waiting for a Blu-ray release to buy it. Now that it's actually out (and in 3D too, which is awesome!), I bought and rewatched it, and noticed a huge amount of problems, particularly with its story pacing. Such a shame, I wish I could watch it from the same viewpoint I had before and get the good experience.

Welp. This statement is dismissive of the entirety of quality science fiction.

Clockwork orange, do androids dream of electric sheep, district 9, children of men, etc etc. All about concrete things in human nature/society that could have been set the modern world, but weren't, for the purposes of creating clarity via allegory/metaphor.
The "if you're going to write about x, make it about *actual* x that's happening now" logic scraps the entire genre.

WELL GREAT. I NINJAD SMITHY AND THEN NINJAD ME.
I wrote:
"Yeah, I'm joking.
Sure, for creating metaphors and showing things people wouldn't see otherwise it's great. But what if we're just glorifying the extrapolation, people? What if we are creating generations of kiddies more and more dependent on fantasy? Isn't real life good enough? Is this some kinda of slippy slope deal?
<looks outside>
Nope. Never mind. Continue."
But my bad timing ruined it. How was Looper?

Excellent!
Every time I thought about how dumb the premise was, the image of Bruce Willis in the diner shouting "IT DOESN'T MATTER" popped into my head and I was able to focus on the characters

i expressed myself pretty terribly. i didn't mean, "don't put aliens in your movie about apartheid", i meant "if you want to draw paraleells to something, draw them as strongly as possible and don't be wishy-washy about it". the director actually denied that he was trying to make an allegorical film, which is a fucking lie, but he's able to say it bc after the first act a lot of the metaphorical bits fade into the background.

got around to watching Looper, really good, I wish I had seen it while it was still in cinemas now. It's always difficult to suspend disbelief in time travel movies, but that aside Looper has some cool sci-fi themes going on, felt very original.
