I never enjoyed tarantinesque crap
tarantino is style over substance but i like him. his shit becomes more enjoyable if you just think of him as a kid who grew up watching european b-movies on vhs and is now making his own dream b-movies using hollywood budgets.

So, kinda like indies and Zelda and Super Mario Brothers??  Right??

I do like robert rodriguez movies because they are cheesy but fun and they have some good cinematography.
Whereas tarantino's movies are what I'd like to direct if I was 10 yers old and slightly asperger and they have no redeeming value.

Of course it's still a question of personal taste

I watched Irreversible. Not bad! The style really draws you in. A lot of the time not a lot is happening on screen, but the cinematography, dialogue and continuous takes are really enjoyable.

I watched A Boy & His Dog, loved it until the last minute. It's a good post apocalyptic movie, Fallout owes a lot to it and Harlan Ellison, who wrote the original novella.

If they hadn't changed the final line into some dumb sexist joke said completely out of character it would have been great.

I could see why. It's a deeply self-aware pulpy story with 2d characters and meaningless dialogue, but that's why most people think it's great. It's also mechanically an awesome movie.

Watched Lincoln last tuesday. It's a "meh movie". Will watch Amour next tuesday.

This in my local auditorium, were they show these movies for free. I saw Django Unchained there too. Quite nice, but not stellar. The scene I liked best was one of the flashbacks, where Waltz says to Django something like "they'll call you the fastest gun in the south"
Waltz's pose and look in his eyes were etched in my mind. It almost seemed real.

And Waltz is a great actor. Hand Clap

The way I heard Lincoln described in terms of political play I expected it to be more along the lines of The Thick of It or House of Cards, but the vote hunt turned out to be mostly some slapsticky bribery.
Also the guy himself was supposed to be presented more as a person than a historical nearly-saint icon. And he was humanized, to a point, but it felt restrained, so as not to offend anyone.
Meh indeed.

Watched Freeway recently, it was pretty fucked up, but in a good way.

As for PF, here's some coherent words on why it's great from a guy who's supposed to know his shit when it comes to movies.

I'm going to re-watch this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1259521/?ref_=sr_1) funny 'horror-like' movie where unicorns aren't these good pink creatures.

Same. I wish I could find something else of that caliber.

So, movies huh... nothing new is piquing my interest yet, so I delve into some classics every so often. Here are some favorites.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre - This is my favorite Bogart film. He is more dynamic and flawed here than in his usual noir tough-guy roles. Though Casablanca may be a better film, I prefer this one.

Breathless - This can be dismissed by some as an example of style-over-substance, but that seems short-sighted. The director, Godard, was a film critic, which probably lends to the style approach. The cinematography and dialogue are great (also used the jump-cut in a way never seen before then), and the pace is great too. Semi-romantic, lighthearted.

Manhattan Murder Mystery - favorite Woody Allen comedy. Sure as hell beats Annie Hall, but then so many of his films do.

The truth comes out. I could superficially 'hate' the LOTR series for this reason but I enjoy it on some level. What I like about PF is it's compulsively watchable; most movies have zero 'replay' value, but I've seen that one about a dozen times and wasn't bored. That said, I have a thing for gangster movies.. I've rewatched Casino and the Godfather just as often.

Yeah, likewise. There's something about it.

On the other hand, I find the trend of over-the-top gore and violence in T's latest to be too much for me. I still somewhat liked Django for what it did right, but equally turned off for what it didn't.. same for I.B.. I hated Kill Bill though. Wasn't enjoyable in the sligthest, and mostly disgusted me.

alphaville is also great.

btw, out of curiosity, what are your definitions of "style" and "substance" in film?

EDITTTT: because everyone is talking about django unchained, the original django from 1966 is a great movie u should all see. plus "the great silence", by the same director, is probably the best non-leone spaghetti western.
