Okay!  Moving on then...this one is a little more specific than previous challenges.

Write a one minute, thirty second loop of background music for a strategy game.  Keep in mind the music has to be non-intrusive, since the player should be more focused on the strategy itself, but enough there to set the mood for the environment the player is in.  The music should be designed to loop.

I'm also setting a hard deadline of June 29th at midnight!

Any questions, post them up!

Nice, this sounds pleasantly non-threatening  :D
Does this mean MC6 starts on July 1st?

Since it would make sense to just post my question in this topic, here goes.

What music program would you folks suggest for someone who is broke and pretty much unexperienced with the whole 'make digital music' shenanigans?

What?  There was no epic fail!  It was a sweet idea and there were some great tunes that came of it.  Where's the fail?

And by strategy game, you're right, it could be anything, I just used that as an example of the type of game that would have this type of music.  Just something to put you in the right mindset.  Really, whatever works to get you in the zone is what you should think of.

Try out [urlhttp://buzinkai.net/PXTone/tutorial/]]pxtone;[/url] it's quite simple to use, and quite effective.

It was such a *hard* challenge.  I learned a lot from it, though (that said, I also got really stressed out).  I have to get around to finishing off listening to the rest of the other entries.

I am by no means an authority, but I would say yes.  I think we all have something that can play back a midi file.

If you're a novice musician, then one of the simple programs that others recommend will probably be just fine, but if you have a music background and just no recording background, and you want something more serious, there are actually a lot of options for people on your budget.

I strongly recommend Energy XT2, which is quite awesome, for its price:
http://www.energy-xt.com/

Then, of course, there's Reaper.  A favorite among open source geeks:
http://www.cockos.com/reaper/purchase.php

And there are a number of good programs that are only a little expensive.  Personally, I use a number of DAWs (for professional composition work), but one of my primary DAWs is also one of the cheapest, Tracktion:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Mackie-Tracktion-3-Project-Bundle?sku=701816

Anyway, I hope this helps.  I didn't want to leave you hangin.  I can also direct you to a bunch of free VST plugins that will make your stuff sound awesome, if you want to work with one of these more advanced platforms.

Looks like I am keeping this thread alive.

Anyway, I mocked up something last night for this little compo.  Unfortunately, I think I went a little too far towards war-RTS music.  It didn't occur to me until I was finishing up that 'Strategy' could also mean Civilization or Pirates or even SimCity... so I might do another one.

Music tracking is something I would like to get into, but I fear my ability to write music is poor at best, I've dicked around in fruity loops but nothing I would show to anyone.

Oh Quiggan, Music tracking, and sequencing are different.

Also, dont fear so much.  if you dont like it, dont post it.

But, learn by doing, and practice makes perfect.

I like it!  It does a great job of setting the mood.  Especially the second half with the piano.  Not too intrusive, and even calming, which is good when you're trying to focus.

I'd encourage to post it even if you don't.  Practice, of course, is very important, but conversation about your efforts can also prove quite helpful I think you'll find.  Also Fruity Loops rocks (or at least it did several years ago; I've not used it in a very long time).  Hard disk fail restricts net access but I have a failsafe bad entry done that I'm perfectly willing to submit myself come thursday, have I not done anything more satisfactory by then.

Ive got a little 20 second loop Im working on, I guess I could make a intro and a solo or fill that is changed up and make it longer, well really its a 5 second loop, but it sounds ok with 4 reps

I attached the midi, I decided Im going to use it as background music for a town in my rpg. it needs work, but its like the first "song" Ive done, outside of a few drum loops.

Here it is!

The Taste Of Confrontation
http://bossies.org/Battlerager/Battlerager-The_Taste_Of_Confrontation.mid

I think the flutes could be a little to loud in the 2nd half, maybe I'll fix that later or whatever  Gentleman

The title is fairly generic; at first I wanted to name it "something with wind" because it has that "wind-ish" sound to it (DUH Flute) Tongue

It repeats once, so actually its roughly 1:37 long. Not EXACTLY 1:30, but I think it's okay  Beer!

cool song rager, its a bit 'harsh' in a couple spots, like it jumps at you a little. Very nice, what soft did you use ?

also, can I pick the next music challenge, I have a couple ideas, one in particular. So, can I pick the next or be added to the list ?
