the xenogears/xenosaga series was written out all at once first, as well as the too human trilogy; i don't know of any confirmed cases of any others offhand though

typically they write it out all ahead of time. for instance, i believe the stories to the three star wars prequel movies were written even before the first original star wars movie came out in the 70s. similarly rowling had outlined the entire 7 harry potter books before she published the first book.

I've heard that George Lucas wrote out all six movies before the first one was even made, but I have a hard time believing that they were actually planned. I mean, let's take a look at the original trilogy; why on Earth would Lucas even set up romantic tension between Luke and Leia (and then a love triangle involving them and Han Solo) if he knew that he was going to reveal that the two were siblings? Not to mention that the way that they treat the Empire in the first movie is a bit different from the other two movies- Darth Vader's given a much stronger role after A New Hope.

On top of all this, have you ever seen the original scripts for those movies? Just google 'em, they're nutso.

Because the characters didn't know they were siblings.

a lot of star wars is changed from the original version, the brother/sister thing was added later and so was darth vader being luke's father. it also could have happened that han solo was done for at the end of episode two

why is there no nerdy emote? we have two top hat ones but no geek one? how can i be expected to drop this kind of star wars info with no accompanying emote

Or maybe because they did not anticipate success and made the first movie stand alone, before retconning the original plan. Also production problem always have big impact on filmography + 3 different director under george lucas, one for each movie, and what about obi wan actor who ask to left the movie and then they had to kill him?

things change in outlines and design docs, it's not exceptional to have it change so much that it's almost no longer recognizable. but they were planned, and some of the things were kept. so i suspect the same is true of mega man legends 3; there was probably a plan written about how the story would continue through three games even before mega man legends 1 was released, but it probably changed a lot as mega man legends 2 was made, and would change again if mega man legends 3 was made. but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, or that they have no idea how the story will end. almost nobody who writes a story has no idea how it'll end, often with plotting the ending is one of the first things you come up with, and you work backwards about how to get there

Yes but there is no proof, still a lot of speculation, so far most game have real record of nothing plan despite obvious continuity or screwing up.

Zelda is a prime exemple of this, there is a lot of continuity matter in the story, they were never plan (for example the war told in Lttp was suppose to be enact in OOt, TP, FSA, but all fail short at it and create a new continuity which is retcon and then broke again in sequel/prequel, zelda II tales of the primary zelda is too and the official guide of zelda 1 says that ganon was defeat 3 times before, aside from direct sequel it's a huge mess)

but zelda doesn't even have much of a story. mario games don't have a consistent story either. i mean games which are direct story continuations of other games, not games that are just have the same name

for instance, i'm pretty sure the halo games and the gears of war games have had their stories planned out from the beginning, but, say, the doom games would not, because doom, while it has a story, isn't story-focused in the way they are

If somebody created a Megaman Legends 3 fangame I would play the hell out of it. Even if it was just a hack of the MML1 or 2 ROM I'd be down with it.
Here, have fun.

While nintendo make the gameplay forefront and downplay narrative, I can assure you there is PLENTY story in zelda. It's subtle but it's everywhere, mostly by the use of symbol and reference, everything has some story attach to him. IMO they use a very effective storytelling method because it's there if you only care.

It seems to me halo didn't really have story too much plan, halo 2 was an afterthought and 3 was the cutting floor of halo2. They start enriching thing with halo2 sure, but that's improvisation on backstory. Story are not plan, backstory is!

but in the case of star wars and any game or movie that's a prequel the prequels are backstory

and i know there's some story in zelda, but there isn't much of a continuous narrative *between* games. every game is its own self-contained story. compare that to resident evil where each game uses the same actual people and continues the plot of the previous games. those are different types of things. if a series is a set of self-contained stories, like zelda or final fantasy, there's no need to write the stories of the sequels ahead of time. but there is if the story has a plot that goes from one game to another, like resident evil, metal gear solid, mega man legends, etc.

I've always thought of those symbols and visual cues in Zelda as being more about establishing a sense of place and atmosphere than telling a story.

Of course you could argue that the atmophere is part of the story.

If you check fort those reoccurring sheikah symbol that are not place randomly, or when you know that you can actually read hylian scripture to have some backstory (ie obviously in wind waker) or the multiple lineage and reference between character ... and many more subtle details (the hylian shield is not random)

It's not just atmosphere, but it serve well some hardcore fan (I had a trip on zelda wiki recently Who, Me? )

edit:
Think of the cue skyward sword use ("zelda" is not shown as a princess, link ride a red bird, the music is the inverse of zelda lullaby, etc...)

all of this are implied instead of tell or even shown
