So I bought Minecraft yesterday and apparently a highly anticipated mod that's been in development for a few months came out yesterday as well. It's called the Aether mod and is its own big adventure and looks gorgeous. From what I hear, it could be its own standalone game.

It looks pretty awesome, but right now I need to figure out how to install ModLoader, AudioMod, ShockAhPl, THIS MOD, and even figure out how to actually play Minecraft. I'm a complete Minecraft idiot.

From what I remember, you'll need to be able to extract or edit JAR files for a lot of that -- it's not a big deal, but you may not have software on hand that does so. It may have changed since I did modding, of course, but it's not hard.

All complete gibberish to me. I can't even figure out how to create things.

that doesn't surprise me, he's also busy working on that other game (some type of card game) and hiring people and so on

this does actually make minecraft look visually appealing though; one of the things that put me off in the past (even though i liked the idea of the game) was how programmer-art it looked, so maybe i'll give this mod a try

Shades of Skies of Arcadia, which is a very good thing. The idea of digging a mine and punching through to make a hole overlooking infinite sky is pretty sexy.

Idk if you're following Minecraft (I guess not) but the current versions don't look much like programmer art to me.

Suffice to say it is very simple and the forum posts will give you the directions. You will just need to install some software -- I recommend 7-zip -- to install the mods.

what pisses me off about this mod is that they were able to make it in four months. in which time Notch added.. what? a fucking map?

Well yeah, Notch didn't have any of Minecrafts code as a starting point, these guys did. This mod just builds on the base of code already there. If you look at the features of the mod, the basic code for them is already in the game, all they've done is expand on it with new crafting recipes, mobs and different terrain/dungeon generation.

The point is that that base code has been there for four months for Notch to use as well.

I think Toady One handles the "publicity" side of things for Dwarf Fortress much better Notch does for Minecraft. He's always very clear about what he's working towards and posts updates on what he's doing almost daily.

But of course DF's community is much smaller than Minecraft's so it's probably easier to handle.

one of the things about these mods though is that they don't have to be overly compatible with stuff. Of course I think the mod creators try to make their mods compatible with others' when possible, but most of them are restricted to single player and will break if you try using them with other mods, etc.

The actual main game though has to have all features working both in single player and multiplayer, which I'm assuming complicates things quite a bit. Lately they've been adding a ton of shit for upcoming ver 1.8, like a new lighting system and hunger and stuff.
