seems that courier is a bit of hit, currently the most popular entry this week. so that means it's right in front on Steam's hub page for Dota2.

Hey, I'm an avid LoL player and I want to try out Dota 2 just to see how it is but I have one question.

How graphics intensive is Dota 2?  My computer can run LoL at 60 fps easily but has a harder time running some other modern games like Tribes Ascend and I was wondering what fps should I expect?

why not just load the game and see? Dota 2 can run on very weak machines on it's low settings, I use my laptop to LAN it sometimes, it runs fine on that.

I think you could make it run on worse computers than LoL will run on. The graphics settings are super customizable, and it's on a much less haphazardly created engine.

Alright, thanks for the responses.  Now that I've installed the game I've realized that I still had to apply for an invite :/

The survey they made me do was extremely awkward because I've never played dota in my life and it expects me to answer all these questions about it.  But at the same time I don't want to put 0s for every answer because I feel like I'd at least be ok at Dota 2 seeing as I'm Gold II in League.

If you need an invite just add this bot and send him a private message saying "give dota". Actually I should probably just put these instructions in the OP of this thread...

Alright, so I tried Dota 2.

Idk what to think about it.  It seems really inaccessible.

There's just so much random crap going on without any rhyme or reason or explanation to anything.  It feels like what a lot of people have said where it seems to have stuck to some weird traditions rather than just built from the ground up with clear goals like LoL.  Or at least that's the best explanation I can think of for how bizarre it was.

I was playing Lina and I at least had enough Moba sense to know how to Insta-kill anyone that walked close to me (speaking of that, how can you tell how far you can cast spells?) but 3 of our teammates ended up DCing so it was GG regardless.

I main Lux in LoL, a mage character that has 4 long range skill shots for her spells and specializes in AoE and single target burst as well as supportive utility for her team.  I'd like to find a similar champ in Dota to start with.

closest is wind runner, but not many heroes have skill shots in dota. the game has a few more obscure things, but i think going from dota -> lol has similar issues. they're not really the same game at all. the skillsets / ults / meta are completely different, and lol is far more stat / skill shot based than dota. an example of this is how in lol most items have stat increases, while in dota, almost every big item has an active ability. banshees veil is a passive that blocks one skill, while the dota equivalent (BKB) blocks almost all spells for 5-10 seconds. etc. skills in dota are also usually a lot "bigger" / "op."

there are skills that transfer (positioning, farming in LoL is similar to how you flash farm with certain carries in dota, ganking is sorta similar, map awareness, etc), but it's not like going from CoD to CoD:Blops, it's more like going from CoD to Counter Strike or something.

there are a bunch of threads about going from lol to dota, btw, like this one: click me  ! 1
you should play a few bot games and check out some of those threads / watch some vidyas.

Yeah its because there's a lot of mechanics that don't make sense aesthetically. For instance, forest creeps resporn magically when you're not standing in an invisible box every 60 seconds. Towers in a line behind the front one are mysteriously protected from harm despite any graphical explanation. Gold appears above your head when you kill a creep. Fire doesn't melt ice. etc. etc. Basically there's a lot they could improve to make the world so much more logical and cooler.

You can hover over skill icons to see the range, you'll probably want to look up the autoexec.cgf thingo so that you can enable a 1200 radius around your hero (so you can see experience range and some items/skill radius) + larger hero icons on map etc.

 Facepalm LoL players...

Dota makes sense, you just have to learn how to play it first.
Dota is never going to pat you on the back and say you did a great job like LoL does, because, this early in, you aren't doing a good job.
You and everyone you are matchmaking with is most likely new and therefore terrible at dota, obviously you aren't going to understand why you lose at a game if you don't know the mechanics / how to play

EDIT:
Also, i think Mirana is the hero you are looking for with the skillshots and AoE

I agree with what al said too,
Simple things like a beam of light connecting the front towers to the anchient would quickly visually explain why the towers in-between are magically protected

hello my name is john sandoval and i've played 3000+ games of league of legends (where i had an 1800 hidden elo) and ~500 games of dota 2. i've gone back and forth on my opinion on dota 2 throughout the year i've been playing, but now that i've gotten the hang of it (1600 rating) i feel that i can safely say that dota 2 is superior in almost every aspect; it'll just take a few dozen games to unlearn those pesky league of legends habits. look up a few guides, and watch a few streams. it'll be worth it.

just try to play with some dudebros from tigs; we play every other day at least. hit one of us up on steam and make sure you have skype installed and bam instant fun.

HERE ARE SOME GOOD HEROES FOR A DUDE COMING FROM LEAGUE OF LEGENDS:

Keeper of the Light: Massive Beam Wave, Global Ally Teleport, Blind, Mana Heal, Mana Drain. Tons of utility and CAN SPAM ALL DAY. Most Dota heroes can only cast 1 or 2 speells in the early game before running oom; not so with KotL. like a better version of lux, nami and soraka.
Weaver: A carry who can run at max movement speed, turn invisible, and rewind time 5 seconds. tons of escapes, very forgiving.
Lich: A support who can deny creeps (thus reducing enemy exp gain), aoe slow nuke, and has brand's ulti, but way fucking stronger. has no mana problems (his deny skill converts creep hp to mana), very easy to play.

I doubt Dota 2 is superior to LoL since Dota 2 doesn't have Lux, aka: the best champion ever.

Anyways I don't want to play Dota 2 to replace LoL so much as complement it.  I've been intrigued by this game and wanted to try it out while LoL ranked games aren't available Tongue
