How about the early games by the Xcom/Ufo dudes? I'm of course talking about RebelStar and LaserSquad. They made a GBA version (Rebelstar Tactical Command) and PC version (LaserSquad Nemesis) recently.

You can find Java versions of the old games online, and some screenshots I made here.

Yeah, it's totally a tech demo, not much of a game.  And that's the other thing you're supposed to get out of it.  A perfect "what not to do" sort of total game experience.

What good would it be to learn from only good games?
Indeed, and I had already heard that it was a bit crap before I got it, but it was interesting enough as a concept that I wanted to see what it was like regardless. Besides, I still had a little hope... after all, Bangai-O got some pretty bad press, and Bangai-O is genius.

But honestly, it is so slim and so broken, I don't know how Treasure had the gall to go through with it all and charge people good money for Stretch Panic. Perhaps they were a bit short of cash at the time.

I thought I mentioned LaserSquad.  LaserSquad:XCOM::Kyuss:Queens of the Stone Age.   I tried for a while to think of a better music analogy, but I failed because I needed bands that shared members.  This one turns out to be good though, because more people have heard of QOTSA, but I like Kyuss better.

Hah, true, Laser Squad and XCOM share the same designer, Julian Gollop. Need to take a look at other games of his...

Yeah I'm familiar with him. I did extensive research on all strategy games of his, since I started my own fan-project a while ago. I did a bunch of code and art stuff but never finished.

I wish more people had played Obscure.  It was a generic survival horror game for the consoles but it let you play co-op with a friend.  I think all future survival horror games should offer this option.

For indie games I'm having a lot of fun with the retro-style RPGs like Undercroft, Discord Times and (though I'm pretty sure everyone has played it by now) Battle for Wesnoth.  These indies rock my world because I'm probably the only person left who likes RPGs but doesn't like 16bit anime graphics.

I liked theStarwraith series of space combat sims and Small Rockets' Red Ace Squadron.  I haven't tried the multiplayer RA Squadron Gold but I bet it's a blast.

Lastly, I have to throw my 2 cents in for Laser Squad: Nemesis and any of the Combat Mission strategy games.

I'm very fond of Silent Hill 2. It's got something of a cult following, and it sold pretty well, but you don't see it show up on people's favoritest lists as often as it deserves to.

Could be.  Of merit though, it's still maybe 7-8 boss fights... just there's very little other level content to brag about.

D'you prefer it to the original then?

readies sock with snooker balls in it...

I far preferred the monsters in the first one, the second and third's ones were just too surreal to inspire the same level of dread as those little blank-faced schoolkids with knives. Plus, as a professional thick person, all that overy symbology with the shitty sheets, etc, passed me by.

That said, the Dog ending is a thing of genius.

  • Matrix Q2 - vid Painberry's opus, one of my favorite mods before it got tweaked all 'realistically'.  Perhaps topped with his Leper Q2.

Alright, that's it. Who are you and what retard planet do you come from?

I'm not arguing that matrix quake was better before realismsmsmization, rather, I can't understand how you liked it AT ALL. Fuck, is EVERYONE on here sarcastic?

Oh, the irony.

And Rhythm Tengoku is brilliant and essential.

Yeah, the video looks pretty cool Smiley If I ever have some free time I think I might check it out. Wouldn't happen to be a fan translation anywhere?

smashes beer bottle off counter, knocks over table...

Yeah, I definitely preferred the second game to the first. In fact, I might go so far as to say that Silent Hill 2 is my all time favourite game. Ever.

That's probably not a widely held opinion, and that's ok. Speaking objectively, I'm probably, simply, wrong. It's certainly a game with it's fair share of flaws. I guess I just love what it aspires to be more than what it actually is. I do that with a lot of games.

Oddly, I only played the other Silent Hill games after I'd played the second. I didn't really like any of them. Maybe SH2 was some kinda bizarre accident - or maybe I just read too much into it.
