For those who fancy turn-based combat Droop
Steel Panthers: World at War has been free for long time
But I'd recommmend free fan-made versions base on released source code of Steel Panthers 2
WinSPWW2 for 1930-1946
WinSPMBT for post WWII

Might look obsolete (not ugly!), but these games (the latter two) include tons of features and small details, realistically simulating 70 years of combined arms warfare. From 5-turret Soviet tanks, to napalm over NAM, and UAV recon over Iraq. You can even play glider insertions with this engine.

Now in his mid-forties and still unusual Hubert had learnt many important things, when he was young... ...most importantly, that sanity is a compromise.

8-bit is enough is totally the best episode, especially the last battle against Trogdor.
I never got a season pass, so I wouldn't know. Gentleman

Darn I was gonna say H&D Deluxe, then I looked down and it was already mentioned...

Man that game is awesome, but playing nowadays instead of back then, you realize the limitations.

For example, in this game the German's have genetically modified themselves so that they can see things thousands of miles away, they can see perfectly in the dark, and cannot detect a british accent under an officiers uniform.

Maybe I'm too used to the perfect, but taken for granted stealth and enemy AI in splinter cell, where you CAN actually sneak around guards and such, but man, H&D is as fun as it always was.

http://www.freeallegiance.org

Allegiance is free, and one of my favorite games.  After it was abandoned by Microsoft as a commercial product, the community stepped up to the plate and has managed the game's source and community for years.
