Today, on September 1st, a ridiculous law was introduced. In summary, it means that if you or anyone on your internet connection is accused of copyright infringement thrice, your internet is disconnected with a fine of up to (I believe) $250,000.
This unfair law basically means that every single public Wi-fi hotspot will be shut down by the owners for fear of fines, and people will live in fear of 'infringing on copyright'. It's an unfair and ridiculous law, and I figured we need a thread to discuss just how idiotic it is and hope for a reform.
tl;dr New Zealand hates the internet.

okay, this is rude. the government is going to prepared with more money to bribe the ISP. i don't believe if you say the government are all good guy that own only original stuff.

it always make me wonder, why they always enforce and tighten the rule which lead to unfair treatment to their people? it's like provoking their people to bash them back. there must be other solution, right?

these laws can't last. As soon as an MP is accused I'm sure this will be taken seriously.

Day one has passed and not one infringement notice has been issued. The law is actually pretty strange, basically you get three strikes, and after that the law lets them... do nothing. You actually have to be dragged to court to have your internet disconnected. Considering the law already lets them drag you to court and fine you a life time's worth of savings, I'm guessing your loss of internet connection will be the least of your worries.

Anyway, it's only for P2P, something that you can easily prevent amateur pirates from using through your wifi hotspot. More experienced pirates can hide their IP anyway (there's so much piracy, it's not worth it to trace pirates through proxies, as you can easily find those not behind proxies).

Personally, I have no (major) problems with the law.

Huh?  According to the article the law is not in effect yet:
Quote from: the article
The NZ government and press say that this draconian law only goes into effect if infringement doesn't decline over the next two years. But the reality is that 3-strikes can go into effect as early as September, based on consultation solely with rightsholders, with no need for public consultation

Apparently people think that there is enough money in the world to squeeze out of people so that the debt can be payed. They dont realize that there needs to be 10 more earths in order for there to be that much money.

what
I don't think NZ has any really massive debt.
That and this has nothing to do with money, it's just a fine to discourage people.

Have you not heard of fascism?

There is a brief description here:

Some people would like to create a world like that. In an effort to understand why, you must ask yourself what section of society does this system benefit?

so the rightsholders don't get any of the fine?
everywhere else they lobbied they made sure to receive the fine, seems odd.

We've had a very similar law in France for ~2 years but their ways to enforce it are so retardedly old and aged (from a technical standpoint) that no one is bothered by it.

It's an illuminati initiative, they're trying to pass the same law in all coutries.
Basically attempting to shut down p2p (uncontrolled communications) and catering to the interests of the powerful and the ******

That could well be, but this topic is about New Zealand, and has nothing to with debt, so why are you saying it here?
