Big Damn Hero, generally has a sword (bonus points if its a katana), usually leader of a rag-tag group of heros fighting a vast evil empire
Glass Cannons, who can dish it out but can't take any in return. These include Mages, Assassins, etc.
Meat Shields, exist to soak up enemy dps, usually have things like taunts to defend their allies
Berserkers, just keep goin' and goin' and goin', without any regard for themselves.
Support, includes those with heals, revives, and buffs.
Tricksters, these are the guys with debuffs (blinds, poisons, etc). 99 times out of 100 are completely worthless
Rangers, those with ranged weapons (ie guns, bows). Sit at the back and shoot shit from afar.
Basically look at Final Fantasy Tactics, and you've got all your RPG archetypes.

Enemy NPC : just created so the player can defeat it.
Wild Man/Woman : live in the wild, using their bare hand or monster bone as weapon. with broken language.
The Bad Enemy Final Boss/ Final Boss : created to cause chaos without particular reason. with 2 to 5 form.
The Hero Helper NPC : he give hint to the hero without reason, maybe he like hero. sometime annoying.

Chrono Cross does something along the lines of this, too. You can't forget the transportation/captain, the enemy-forces traitor, the amnesiac, the "copy enemies ability" character, that one person that's GOING to die halfway through, and the "fake final boss." Oh yes, and Commander Data, because sentient robots are not only cool, but they really happen, too. Just ask Jim Parsons.

And you can always branch out and come up with new combinations to give the players a bit more variety. One possible system... Just select one from each line: - Offensive/Defensive
- Targeting Enemies/Targeting Friends
- General Focus/Specific Focus
- Targeting Weaknesses/Targeting Strengths
- Mystical Focus/Physical Focus
And then pick or just infer from the above their general stats. Defensive;Enemies;Specific;Strengths;Mystical: Bard. Manipulates enemies's status to be less dangerous. Offensive;Friends;General;Weaknesses;Mystical: Jester. Buffs allied team in various ways. Offensive;Enemies;Specific;Weaknesses;Physical: Assassin. Abuses status effected enemies and deals high damage. Defensive;Friends;General;Strengths;Physical/Mystical: Paladin. Prevents damage to allies by various means (including killing the enemy). And then just have them branch out some as they develop.

'melee' isn't really a qualifier, it's just a way of doing damage if you choose to do damage. it doesn't really define the character archetype, as someone could feasibly do lots of damage by melee or magic. Consider more how the character will act, and then assign them an archetype (Rogue, Mage, Etc), and use that to decide what kind of weapons etc. It will lend itself to more variety. But anyway Offensive;Enemies;Specific;Weaknesses;Physical: Assassin.
