I will find you, and I will look at you with a slightly forlorn facial expression.

So I started watching Ultimate Survivor Kaiji.... and it's amazing. Not only does this show make gambling compelling, I'm discovering there's a whole genre of manga, dedicated to gambling. Pachinko, poker, slot machines, all kindsa shit... how is this even possible? It's glorious.

I am almost done with Akumetsu and while I generally feel good about it I have some complaints that I'll hold off until I'm finished to make.

It's actually really good at what it does, though since I'm not finished yet I can't say anything too decisive.

I thought Akumetsu was absolute shit and I don't understand why people like it. Please make me feel less alone. Well there is something incredibly cathartic about the story on some level, and if you don't get that then that's fine but some people are attuned to it and some aren't. I hate to make such a hubanish claim like that but I think whether or not you find violently fucking up the system with a narcissistic agenda in outlandish murderous ways satisfying as a reader is what it comes down to, and you either do or you don't. It's not an objective thing, so you can probably feel less alone knowing that others don't share your enthusiasm probably.

It's juvenile revenge fantasy done about as well as it can be. I truly enjoy the fact that the top-tier badguys of the story were the same sort of top-tier badguys we have in the real world: shitty bankers and bureaucrats and assorted cronies who wreck the lives of millions to line their pockets. I also truly enjoy that the writer was articulate enough to both create the Akumetsu ideology, as well as indicate all of its flaws and hypocrisies. None of the huge discussions left me feeling like we had an Always Right Goodguy just skewering a strawman Always Wrong Badguy.
I feel that as more of the scifi elements came into play, the author noticed that they sort of detracted from a lot of what made Shou 'special'*, and sort of reigned them back and put more emphasis on his motive. This was a good move, but I feel like there were a lot of ideas that never got fully developed.
One thing I feel that got abandoned was the concept of Akumetsu quizzing or challenging those he was about to destroy. The motorcycle gang scene and the race scene were superb in how precisely they were set up.
The epilogue was also Neal Stephenson level's of "alright, the end, seeya".
*I thought that the author was aiming at a sort of magical realism conceit of Shou's resurrections representing how, as a society, even if some people sacrifice their lives to destroy evil, it's sad but still ultimately a gain.
