Stiens;Gate is available in English for the VN?
Links!
Ah, it turns out the translator removed the translation patch from his site after announcing the game might get an official English release (using his translation). Experience teaches us that this will most likely take AGES, though; the publisher in question (JAST USA) has caused several patch downloads to disappear in July 2009, of which only one has since been released. I'm afraid you'll have to use a search engine to find the patch or something. Most likely it'll be a .npa file containing the translated scripts in the game's format and an executable.

Is "the visual novel is way better" the next level of "the subbed version is way better than the dubbed version"?  Giggle
Nah, it's more like 'the novel is better than the movie'. Except movies are generally big-budget, don't tend to completely ignore character's personalities and often have creators that are at least trying to make something out of it.

It usually happens with anime adaptations of visual novels; you just lose a lot of depth when you have to turn 30+ hours of written and illustrated fiction with audio into 8 hours of anime.

Yeah, I know. The same thing happened with Fate/Stay Night. I watched the anime adaptation before reading the novel, and now the novel is like the best japanese game ever for me.
Are you watching Fate/Zero this season? I haven't read the original light novel, but so far I'm enjoying the f/z anime more than I did f/sn. The series is by ufotable, who also did the Kara no Kyoukai movies, and the original light novel is by Gen Urobuchi, writer for the Madoka anime and the Phantom of Inferno and Saya no Uta visual novels.

I am kidnapping this thread until at least one other human being acknowledges that the hellsing ova is the best thing since sliced braid
Can't agree with that. I really liked it at first, but as the series went on I started disliking it more and more; I dropped it after episode 4. Gratuitous violence is fine, a ridiculous plot featuring zombie nazis is fine, too, but I'd prefer it if they just followed the plot and present the violence as part of that (as it started), rather than just try to show as much violence as possible and use the plot merely as a device to get the story moving to the next violent scene.

The Castle of Cagliostro
I like that people actually get killed a lot in this anime

I've only seen a few episodes so far, but they're pretty good.
And there's no Shiro and his "gonna save everyone" nonsense.
The plot is more grim as well. Serious business!

Castle of Cagliostro is such a fun movie. It's my only exposure to Lupin III so far, what else is there like it?

I agree with the enjoyment of there being deaths and it being acknowledged. The film has aged really well it seems (from the viewpoint of a person watching it for the first time 30+ years later).

The first series is actually getting a DVD release this year. I think that's pretty amazing in itself. It's a good series and fun to watch.

There is also thew new Lupin series, streaming for free on Funimation.com. It's a prequel of sorts where each episode is a unique story. New art style. Looks really good, visually. I've been enjoying it.

If you've never seen Cowboy Bebop, then totally watch that. The characters remind me a lot of each other (in really good ways). Similar aesthetic too. Does anyone else agree?

Hellsing OVA was pretty neat.

I started watching Valkyria Chronicles, it wasn't too bad, never finished it though. I think I got up to *that part* in the anime.

Relevant to those in NA, "Toonami" returns tonight a.k.a. AdultSwim has rebranded Saturday Night Action (Anime) to Toonami and picked up a few new shows.

Not to completely shit on your point or anything, but the hellsing OVA follows the manga panel by panel, word for word

There is nothing it does that the ink and words didn't do. there's nothing the ink and words do that the OVA doesn't do.

So... uh...

You're wrong, I guess.

No, I was aware it was extremely close to its source material. It just means that its source material also went into a direction I strongly disliked.

Well that's fair, then!

Although the violence is like... the best part. All the later episodes/chapters in the manga are just long long discussions about the nature of God and Mankind and War and Violence punctuated by people getting sliced to ribbons with wire, or faces getting blown off by silent nazi werewolves and stuff like that

That sounds more like my kind of series. Around what episode does it become like that?

Once the London Invasion stuff starts, which I think is like 6 or 7?

The start is mainly just setting the stage for this huge war filled with over-the-top rambling philosophical monologues and hyper-violence
