I agree with Blambo and it was one of the main reasons i didn't really enjoy the film. I dont really have any sympathy for him once he leaves his aunts? place.

I think it's more honest and interesting for being a story where the protagonist is not portrayed as a blameless victim. The author of the novel was writing based on his own experiences, his own sister's death, partly out of guilt.

The movie pretty much portrayed him as a victim of the times. He's a complex character in the novel.

That sequence of events was hard for me to relate to too. Why doesn't the boy take responsibility? Though I've made similar decisions in my life as him. He is protecting the innocence of his sister, and succeeds at doing so. He is kind of a martyr and also an idiot.
I wish the movie tried to explain his reasoning a little more. The creators left that one a little too untouched. I think that was the mistake, not the decision to let the boy do what he did.
