Almost done with watching Evangelion for the first time. It's great approaching it as a character study that just happens to involve giant robots. Shinji's actually the most relatable character on the show to me, next to Misato. He doesn't come off as whiny most of the time, just emotionally traumatized, which considering everything the kid has been through is pretty understandable. I actually found Asuka way more obnoxious, although I suppose that's the point. I'm not really sure why there was ever much fan fervor over her or Rei, though; they're kinda interesting characters, but nothing that screams 'sexy' to me... especially since they're fifteen. Geez everyone.

Also what is up with that penguin. I only have three episodes and the movies left, is there some reason they have a penguin waddling around their apartment with some fancy backpack. It's cute, but... what's the point?

I think they'd have had less impact if "sexy" did fit as a description. Sexy women had already been done. Having characters depicted in a less cartoony way, being weird, troubled, lonely adolescents and the way the series was dealing with the start of sexuality, showing it as an awkward experience, was part of what made Eva stand out and work for its audience. Anyway, it was a very popular TV anime and Sadamoto's designs were good (ahead of their time). It was also when character goods start to increase in importance as a way for the anime industry to make money, so Asuka and Rei kind of became the forefront of a fairly new type of marketing push.

The images are from these, but I don't know if there's a real translation of them:

Nope. It's part of the Japanese government funded Young Animator Training Project (aka Anime Mirai). It's been running 3 years, each year 4 shorts were made by different studios. Little Witch Academia was Studio Trigger (young studio formed by some ex-Gainax talent).
