My sister use to watch that anime and made great praise about it. I'm not sure what's so different from other anime as I watch it tangentially. Switch girl got my favor as a soup up version of kare kano.
I like it just because shonen-ai is my weakness (should be obvious from the dalfy thread), especially when it's in a dark devil/demonic setting. don't ask. I don't like shota though. But the characters here don't act like kids.

Say "I love you" has good romance without being over-dramatic or trying too hard to be funny. NANA is also a good romance, but for a more grown-up audience (which we need more of to be honest).
Ouran High School Host Club is a GREAT romantic comedy that pokes fun at shoujo fans while pandering to them at the same time. It's quite genius.

My girlfriend has described it as "Shotabait"
Which appeals to young girls and John Sandoval

Acceptable to exoticize in fiction at least.

Well attribution is so random in manga (and straight people are not better characterize) that the only exotic aspect is the whole "manga" framework. I mean anyone can be hero/strong/weak/insane irrespective of sexual orientation or even skin color, it's like hair/eyes colors it's random at best, especially in modern manga. Even the quiet girl is not always the shy one, she might be anything from insane/overpowered/submissive/authoritative, etc... That's so fresh compare to western tropes. In fact whenever a new type are created, you see instant variation and declination in derivative works. To watch a manga is like watching an endless mixing of tropes put into a blender. I mean where else you could see a black main that is hyper competent but also a woman with no allusion to her gender or skin color (gunsmith cat)? They are not immune to stereotypes, but it's a component rather than a class.

I guess anime/manga have a lot more varied tropes, you just have to watch/read the right series.
Ouran Host Club is very off-putting in the first handful of episodes because of its outrageous-ness and....yaoi-bate-ness. Eventually though, all of the cast are revealed to have a surprising amount of depth to them, and the series slowly shows you why all of the characters act a certain way. It's one of the better shoujo anime out there. If you can't stand it, watch the english dub. It's funnier because Funimation does good dubs and localization.

saying that anime stuff has varied characterization tropes is kind of a far stretch, you'll find very similar character types in completely different genres and stories man they even have names for a lot of their character types

I mean where else you could see a black main that is hyper competent but also a woman with no allusion to her gender or skin color (gunsmith cat)?
Larry, the strong-willed, brown skinned, blue eyed, celibate lesbian gunsmith/bounty hunter teenager, is a pretty good example of exoticised characterisation. And where else could you see a 17 year old former child prostitute who takes growth stunting drugs to stay attractive to her pedophile Japanese boyfriend? There's a bit of a difference between representation in fiction because the creator is reflecting real people and depicting healthy attitudes of acceptance, vs. just using those elements in interestingly exotic fantasy for the entertainment of the audience. The latter can certainly be fun, but I think it's worth remembering that it's not really achieving the same thing as the former.
