haha i knew you'd link that movie when you talked about beautiful animation in one piece i havent watched much of the anime but the manga is the only "battle shonen" manga worth reading amazing plot and characters and design and art and TEARJERKING the rest of shonen mangas is just HEH NO I fully agree on the One Piece manga. Its actually the only 'comic' of any kind I read on a regular basis. Oda's art and storytelling have continued to get better and better over the years. As far as the anime I don't really care for it. It doesn't seem to come across as well as the manga. And the clip you linked is from one of the movies. The quality between the show and movies is quite different - and I think the studio behind the one in your clip is Studio 4°C who also did Tekkon Kinkreet.

If you like weird, sinister, atmospheric stuff and don't mind a bit of cyberpunk: Tsutomu Nihei's older stuff. BLAME, Biomega, and etc.
On a related note, has anyone else read his new series, Knights of Sidonia? It's actually really, really good. It's a bit like Gundam but with actual characters and people can actually die

i have yet to watch redline, it's on my list and sandoval's hype isn't helping it and TEARJERKING
I KNOW AAAAAA there's a decent amount of utterly depressing moments in the early parts of the show (mostly the backstory of several characters) but right around the Enies Lobby arc the shit just keeps coming and its all so well written and aaaaaaaa it does take a while to pick up though, which is a shame since a lot of people refuse reading/watching it because it's so long ): and when you get to the current chapter, you only wish it were twice as long yeah, the only parts i honestly wish were shorter would have to be skypeia and fishman island as badass as enel was the entire arc was literally just bleach: one piece edition, and fishman island had some really uninspired designs. Hody Jones was pretty nice and then uh they expanded on his character... at all. every other arc deserves to be loooonggeerrrrr

i agree on the entire jaya/skypiea arc being uninteresting overall, but the ending was really glorious imo and gave meaning to it
i reeeaaally enjoyed the fishman island arc, mostly because of the flashback stuff (fisher tiger/otohime made me cry like a faggot). the actual fighting was plenty uninteresting unfortunately
also, latest chapter spoilers: i hope they get to big man / smoker stuff soon. the entrance to the new world was extremely awesome, this punk hazard place looked interesting but then A DAGRON appeared ):

That one iirc is by shintaro kago. Thta man is genious. Every single work of him borders on overly surreal and disturbing. In pacticular the one about blowjobs.

SMOKER LOOKS SO SEXY NOW UNF also yes punk hazard looks pretty great so far, and on the subject of dragons, if we include an early filler arc zoro has both seen a dragon and a samurai before yet he has claimed that he DOESNT BELIEVE IN DRAGONS and that he has no idea what a samurai is and while this is probably just a giant plot hole, i prefer to think of it as a really funny jab at how stupid he actually is

I have Shintaro Kago's animation collection... I never actually got around to watching all of them, but what I did see looked a bit crude albeit interesting, but perhaps a bit to pop-surreal for me (like Dali)... I prefer my surrealism to be a bit more ambient/ethereal, like the stuff in Tenshi no Tamago. Another one you might be interested in if you like Cat Soup or surreal/weird stuff is Genius Party... It's a collection of various shorts by different artists, and the focus is on making something cool and succinct, which usually works out pretty well for these compilation pieces.

shintaro kago is far mor known for his somewhat detailed and polished manga rather than his mediocre animated clips.

i dont think oda is taking into account that erik of the wind filler (i think it was that? just before alabasta) and i think zoro meets a samurai guy in thriller bark? the one who wanted to cut brook's 'fro i personally want to see more of this guy / three-eyed girl too:

Ten minute clip from the new Berserk movie. I haven't watched it yet so I can't speak for how good it is, but yeah... EDIT: It would appear all the gore has been censored for the preview. :c

Ughh... The amount of CG shortcuts in that clip is stomach-turning; and if you are actually a Berserk fan it's like having a knife twisted in your gut.
Anyways, after watching that I've decided to start watching the series over again, and once that's through I think I'm going to check out the manga.

I don't think it's great that Nihei has ended up doing a harem love comedy with school kids piloting mechs, but it's pretty good. The love comedy stuff is sort of redeemed by the photosynthesis gags and the No.1 harem member being a hermaphrodite. BTW, you seem to be implying people can't die in Gundam, but the creator of Gundam wasn't known as Kill 'Em All Tomino for no reason. People dying was a pretty important part of Universal Century Gundam, Zeta and Victory in particular. The current OVA series, Unicorn, is a return to the UC setting and has really nice production values. On manga recommendations, it seems like Franken Fran and Dorohedoro would suit some tastes here. Possibly also Ueshiba Riichi's work, like Discommunication and Yume Tsukai.

I agree... the CG in that clip looked really stilted and unnatural, especially during swordplay.

Hmm, watching anime, I've always felt inspired to experiment with making one of my own. Of course this would be a tremendous task but I think it would be possible with a few of the right people... Even a short, experimental film would be cool. My only question is, where do you buy transparent animation cels? They seem super rare and hard to come by now that everything is digital. If this is something I took on as an indie project, I'd want to do it the old fashioned way.

Do a little work and read the manga. There's not THAT much text, and the artwork is beautiful (eventually - the first few volumes are a bit rough). .jpg)

Not like I've ever bought any, but perhaps http://www.chromacolour.com/store/animation-home-ca.htm
